Under limited supervision of Department Supervisors, perform a variety of maintenance and operating procedures involving certain skills in the repair and installation of all sizes, types, and kinds of mains, services, and appurtenances; performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Generally, direct the work of two Distribution System Workers, and may direct additional labor and equipment as required by the assigned job.
Direct use of truck, tools and equipment, and the various methods used to locate, install and repair mains, valves, services, hydrants, etc.
Support Operations Workers with shut-downs and other maintenance and installation work in or around lake reservoirs, tanks, structures or other company facilities or contracted work as required.
Train and evaluate new Distribution System Workers on 3-month rotations to perform effectively in their role.
Perform operations and distribution system maintenance and installation work, with a minimum of support crews and resources (backhoe, asphalt saw, USA locators, valve crew, etc.).
Procure and expedite all parts and materials to job sites.
Prepare necessary reports and other documentation as required.
Assure work is done in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Company policy and safety standards.
Report to Supervisors any irregularities or safety hazards and comply with all local, state and federal agency regulatory procedures, practices and requirements.
Perform and keep accurate documentation for contract repair, maintenance and installation in the distribution system work outside of the SJWC system.
Assure quality work is performed to Company and department standards and specifications, or other contract standards and specifications, as required.
Provide weekend ("C") or grave ("G") emergency maintenance support to other departments.
Provide logistic support for weekend community events throughout the service area as required (Crewleader "C" only).
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a current, valid California Class B driver's license with air brake endorsement, and a satisfactory driving record.
Possession of a valid California DDW Grade 1 Water Distribution Operator Certification.
Completion of "competent person" training for trenching and shoring certification.
Working knowledge of the identification and use of common hand and power tools, common equipment.
Ability to perform strenuous outdoor physical work requiring manual dexterity, agility, strength, stamina and coordination.
Demonstrate proficiency in job site management in distribution system maintenance and installation.
Ability to accurately give and to carry out oral and written instructions and demonstrate procedures.
Ability to use independent judgment and initiative.
Ability to respond to distribution system emergencies with minimal planning.
Working knowledge of company service area and system.
Seven (7) years of prior distribution system experience working under the direction of the Distribution System Department.
Have knowledge of applicable safety practices as required by governmental agencies related to SJWC work.
Basic computer skills, and the ability to learn and use various software programs.
Must possess any additional certifications and licenses necessary to meet state requirements for the performance of work assignments as a Crewleader C or Crewleader G.
