The Phlebotomist collects (capillary and venipuncture) blood specimens from patients of all ages, assists patients with non-blood collections and is responsible for specimen integrity through accuracy of patient identification, specimen labelling, collection steps and specimen transport. This position performs occasional point-of-care patient testing such as glucose. The phlebotomist provides exceptional customer service.
Essential Job Functions:
Performs patient identification and specimen labeling according to standard operating procedures.
Understands the phlebotomy processes and techniques in order to obtain quality blood specimens to ensure that correct decisions are made regarding specimen collection.
Performs, interprets and reports point-of-care testing (e.g. glucose) and quality control.
Processes laboratory and patient reports according to standard operating procedure, e.g. printing, recording, distributing, faxing, filing, and retrieving.
Recognizes problems, takes appropriate action, documents problems and corrective action, and follows protocol to notify the Supervisor of problems in a timely manner so as not to jeopardize patient care.
Actively communicates throughout the shift and manages priority requests in a courteous and timely manner to ensure effective department workflow. Follows up with STAT, ASAP, and Pre-op draws to ensure turnaround times are met.
Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
