Job Summary / Basic Function:


Job Summary:The Instructor for Government's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing instruction for students enrolled in Texas and Federal Government courses (along with other related courses and topics) in the General Education and Developmental Studies Department, including dual credit high school students. This individual is also responsible for maintaining office hours; and teaching extended day classes, and hybrid/online courses, as required, both on campus and at alternate locations. This individual attends workshops, seminars, and conferences to upgrade teaching skills and assists in the development of curriculum, as needed; All LIT faculty are responsible for recruitment and retention as a part of achieving the Institute's Shared Vision of Growth and Excellence.


Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Actively engage students in the learning process

  • Maintain ethical and professional behavior

  • Maintain knowledge of and adherence to the policies and procedures contained in the TSUS and LIT Policies and Procedures Manual

  • Participate in college service, which includes but is not limited to, committee work, advising and/or tutoring students, and recruiting

  • Teach classes during the fall and spring semesters as required by the department (might include day, evening, weekend, and Early College High School/dual credit), including online courses

  • Provide mentorship to dual credit instructors and students

  • Attend Teaching and Learning Center sessions to enhance teaching skills

  • Stay abreast of national matters and trends in education

  • Maintain knowledge of national, state, and local statutes as they apply to government courses

  • Participate in assessment activities for the LIT Core Curriculum

  • Assist in the development of curriculum, as needed

  • Perform other related duties, as required





Physical Requirements:This position requires the ability to: remain in a stationary position for most of the time; occasionally move about inside an office to access documents, office equipment, etc.; constantly operate a computer or other office equipment, such as a printer or copy machine.
Minimum Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Master's degree in Government/Political Science or Master's degree with 18 graduate hours in Government/Political Science

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications

  • Knowledge of teaching methodologies/pedagogical strategies

  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work well in a team environment

  • Possess good time management skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in higher education

  • Experience in national, state, or local government or politics

  • Doctorate degree in subject area

  • Related field and/or industry certifications
