The Department of Biology in Jacksonville State University's College of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences invites applications for an Assistant Professor position
This faculty member will be expected to teach courses in general biology for majors and non-majors, cell biology, and upper-level specialty courses within their biological field of study. Teaching and mentoring masters-level graduate students is also expected. Development of a research program in an area of cell biology is required. The ideal candidate will conduct research utilizing mammalian cell culture, with an interest in cancer research using, for example, plant secondary metabolites such as cannabinoids. The candidate will be innovative with a strong interest in teaching undergraduate and graduate students through active learning pedagogy. The successful candidate will demonstrate aptitude and inclination for engaging students in research, both through individual mentored research as well as course-embedded undergraduate research experiences. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to advise students on future careers and have a working knowledge of curriculum requirements, as well as assessment and educational trends in higher education. A record of grant writing experience for extramural funding is beneficial. Additional requirements include skillful and effective use of English (both oral and written), basic computer skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues as well as professional organizations within their field of expertise outside of JSU.
About the Department
The department currently maintains a variety of specialized facilities, as well as traditional and modern instrumentation, in support of student/faculty research.
In recent years, student/faculty research has been supported by extramural funding through the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, NASA, Alabama Environmental Council, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, U. S. Forest Service and other agencies/groups.
Position Requirements
Candidates must have an earned doctorate or ABD with completion date by June 1, 2025, in one of the content areas managed within the Department of Biology, with a specialization in cell biology or related biological field(s). Candidates must also possess accomplishments sufficient to indicate the ability to meet requirements of the rank of Assistant Professor Biology at Jax State in teaching, service, and scholarly publications.
