The RN Unit Manager plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of nursing services within a long-term care facility. This position involves overseeing nursing staff, maintaining quality resident care, managing administrative tasks, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Responsibilities
Recruitment and Hiring:
Recruit, interview, and hire qualified nursing staff, including Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).
Training and Supervision:
Provide orientation and ongoing training to nursing staff.
Supervise daily activities, ensuring adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations.
Performance Evaluation:
Conduct regular performance evaluations for nursing staff.
Provide constructive feedback and address any performance issues.
Staffing Levels:
Maintain appropriate staffing levels to ensure quality care.
Create and manage work schedules to cover all shifts.
Clinical Oversight
Resident Care:
Oversee resident care to ensure high-quality standards.
Participate in interdisciplinary care planning meetings.
Conduct resident assessments and collaborate on individualized care plans.
Documentation:
Monitor and ensure proper documentation of resident care.
Review charts, progress notes, and other records.
Quality Assurance:
Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
Identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes.
Administrative Duties
Unit Operations:
Manage day-to-day unit operations.
Coordinate activities related to resident care, staffing, and supplies.
Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate resident records and reports.
Ensure compliance with record-keeping requirements.
Inventory Management:
Monitor inventory levels of medical supplies and equipment.
Coordinate restocking and ordering as needed.
Regulatory Compliance
Federal, State, and Local Regulations:
Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.
Stay informed about changes in regulations and update policies accordingly.
Infection Control:
Implement and maintain infection control protocols.
Train staff on infection prevention measures.
Incident Reporting:
Oversee incident reporting and investigation processes.
Address any incidents promptly and appropriately.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Current RN license in the state of practice.
3-5 years of long-term care nursing experience.
Prior supervisory or management experience preferred.
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
