In Military and Veterans Services, the Veterans Benefits Specialist assists military-connected students and their families requesting and receiving financial aid from the VA's GI Bill and all other Federal/State military tuition assistance programs. Coordinates application processing for students between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Department of Defense, the Ohio Department of Higher Education, and the Ohio National Guard. Counsels students/parents concerning financial aid and eligibility requirements.
Serves as a liaison with university departments and external agencies to maintain accuracy of student files. As Senior Veterans Benefits Specialist, manages training and certification of all VA school certifying officials. Coordinates student programming for military family members. Solves problems, acts on appeals and maintains confidentiality of data and sensitive matters. Performs outreach activities including VA workshops and presenting at OSU Veteran Orientations. Conducts presentations/briefings as part of training and education for OSU faculty/staff members. Serves as a subject matter expert with VA policies and OSU related data. Submits compliance reports and bulletins to the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
Acts as university's central point of contact for federal and state audits. Recruits, selects, trains, supervises and evaluates the university's VA student work study program. Manages department's webpage, social media platforms, and newsletters. Performs general student-facing customer support as needed and other duties as assigned.
A hybrid work schedule is authorized (4 days per week in-person and 1 day per week virtual).
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's degree and 2 years of relevant experience required. Experience working with diverse customers, computer systems, and database software.
Desired:
Two to four years of relevant experience preferred. Familiarity with financial systems, student records, and databases. Supervisory/Managerial work including training and education. Strong presentation/briefing ability. Experience in federal/state government programs, veteran's benefits and veterans-related issues. Familiarity with managing webpages, social media, and newsletters.
Additional Information:
The pay range for this job profile is $22.69 - $29.83/hr. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
