Job Summary:

Responsible for the planning and supervision of construction, installation, maintenance and repair of primary and secondary electrical systems, equipment and fixtures.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Estimate cost for electrical work needed for research, renovations and electrical distribution.

    • This requires:

      • Having knowledge of electrical material, building practices, knowledge and research of types of lighting, pricing and the National Electrical Code.






  • Work with Facilities Management administration in regards to planning, design, supervision, inspections and oversight of electrical construction.

    • This includes:

      • Estimates for materials and labor cost for departmental records,





  • Supervise the keeping of records, computerized and manual, for inventory, orders and materials for campus electrical projects.

  • Designing the electrical for renovations. This includes: Researching lighting, designs and controls and layout of outlets and switching.

  • Sizing generators, panels, switchgear, feeders and services to buildings per the NEC.

  • Supervise the operations for maintenance, repair, testing, and installation of primary and secondary electrical systems.

  • Supervise the assignment of electrical operations and task, to include but not limited to assigning jobs.

  • Outline and explain work orders to be done, and inspect completed work and projects.

  • Visit construction sites across campus for construction meetings and inspections.

  • Provide oversight for the Electrician Leader, electricians, as well as associated personnel working under the authority of the Electric Shop Operations

  • Develop and update maintenance and operation programs as well as construction programming and inspection.

  • Plan and layout proposed primary and secondary electrical installations from blueprints, sketches and/or diagrams.

  • Oversee compliance of installations with UT Arlington standards and applicable codes.

  • Maintain and supervise time cards on an automated time keeping system.

  • Maintain records for shop personnel, material, tool inventory, and vehicle servicing.

  • Have weekly meetings with shop personnel to review ongoing and upcoming projects throughout campus.

    • This includes:

      • the layout and training of personnel on the campus electrical distribution, tool inventory of personnel work vehicles and other electrical needs throughout the campus.





  • Maintain the automated work order system.

    • This includes:

      • Issuing work orders to the electrical personnel and making sure work has been performed.

      • Speaking with faculty and staff on the needs of the users and setting up times for work to be performed.

      • Ordering material needed to complete work orders





  • Respond to emergencies before/during/after normal operating hours. This includes Fires, electrical outages, floods, and icy conditions.

  • Must have knowledge of the campus electrical distribution, how to identify the problem, plan for appropriate action, communicate severity and fix the problem.

  • Assist with the installation of electrical for special events.

    • This includes:

      • Concerts, student move-in, homecoming, graduation ceremonies, Special Olympics, special dinners, student welcoming day, sporting events and other student activity events.





  • Must be able to pass and maintain yearly training.

    • This includes:

      • Electrical continuing education, hazardous communication, security training, drivers education, first aid training, asbestos training, boom lift training, scissor lift training, bucket truck training, NFPA 70 training and fork lift training.





  • Install new electrical needed for research equipment.

    • This includes:

      • The design and layout of the electrical system, installation of new equipment and assisting other departments with troubleshooting electrical problems.





  • Maintain records for the testing of generators for all buildings on campus.

    • This includes:

      • Preventative maintenance records, testing times and days and testing all generators under load monthly.





  • Meet with facilities staff and campus faculty to discuss ongoing and upcoming projects.

  • Drive a UTA owned vehicle.

  • Performs other duties assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or equivalent and seven (7) years master level experience including five (5) years in a supervisory capacity.

  • Must have a master's electrical license and be familiar with NFPA 70, 101 and 1.

  • Must have knowledge of all types of electrical equipment, use of hand and power tools common to the electrical trade.

  • Valid Texas Class "c" driver's license or state equivalent to operate a personal vehicle with three years acceptable driving history.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Use of hand and power tools common to the electrical trade.

  • Must be accurate in all phases of work performed.

  • Able to operate one-man lifts, boom lifts, bucket truck and scissor lifts.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Knowledge of medium voltage (15KV) terminations.

  • Knowledge and function of electrical material.


Working Conditions:



  • Conditions do involve exposure to all weather elements and medium to high voltage electrical.

  • Must be able to work off of ladders, scaffolding, and tops/roofs of buildings.

  • Working conditions are considered acceptable, but occasionally involve exposure to one or more disagreeable elements such as bio-hazards, toxic lab chemicals, poisonous gases dust, dirt, and the need to work in confined spaces, extreme cold or hot and all weather conditions.

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, bend, stand, sit, kneel and squat.
