Job Summary



This is a temporary hourly position in the Athletic department and all duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules, and regulations of affiliated national, regional, and state intercollegiate athletic associations, the NAIA, and the University. The assistant coach will not engage in any outside activities in television, radio, clothing or shoe sponsorship, internet, or camps, unless those activities are expressly approved in writing and in advance by the Athletic Director.


Department-Specific Responsibilities:


  • Performs a variety of roles for the sport assigned to, including contacting recruits, setting up visits with recruits, helping with recruit visits, and helping with supervision and coaching at practices and matches.

  • Reports to the head coach assigned to or to the Athletic Director.

  • Actively recruit quality student athletes for the assigned sport. This will include calling, emailing, and visiting coaches, Athletic Directors, student athletes and events for the purpose of having them admitted to IU East for the participation in the athletic team.

  • Assists with practices and matches relative to coaching and supervision. This may include specific coaching areas or may be general oversight.

  • Helps with another team's recruiting needs as well as another team's supervision if the need arises. This will be through the Athletic Director or Assistant Athletic Director.

  • Bachelor's degree

WORK EXPERIENCE



Required



  • Strong commitment to the student-athlete concept and a working knowledge of the NAIA rules and regulations


Preferred



  • 1 year of high school coaching in any sport. American Heart Instructor Certification in CPR and college playing experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES



Required



  • Valid driver¿s license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University

  • First Aide Certified

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

  • Ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the university, the RSC and the NAIA

  • Ability to recruit, coach and teach highly talented student-athletes

  • Knowledge related to sprints, hurdles and jumps




Working Conditions / Demands



General office equipment will be utilized as well as a motor vehicle from time to time.


Work is performed under general supervision and performance evaluation is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained. Tasks can be verbal, written, or self-generated, and the role will vary slightly depending on the ongoing development and improvement of their sport through coordinating, planning, evaluation of team and player specific needs. The Assistant Coach is expected to abide by and comply with the constitution, bylaws, and interpretations of the River State Conference, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and university rules and regulations. The Assistant Coach will make all reasonable efforts to ensure compliance by student-athletes, and other program employees and representatives of the university's athletic program. In the event the Assistant Coach becomes aware, or has reasonable cause to believe, that violations of such constitution, bylaws, and interpretations, rules, or regulations may have taken place, they shall report it promptly to the Athletic Director.


Within the framework of the entire athletic program, the Assistant Coach helps to empower student-athletes to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their potential. They serve as an example/role model. It should be emphasized that in no way do they replace the parent(s) and/or family members of the student-athlete. Rather, they provide interest in helping the student-athletes develop and reach positive academic, career, and personal goals.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required one to positions oneself at a lower level. This position demands extreme physical fitness and the ability to perform specific skill work in the sport. The employee must frequently move items up to 100 pounds. This positions requires the ability to detect items both up close and far away.


Some irritants do exist--inherent part of the position--i.e., this work may include coaching in hot and cold indoor facilities, and exposure to elements such as fumes, inadequate lighting, glare, awkward working position, dust, etc. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
