Job Summary:
The Senior Structural Designer is responsible for conceptualizing, developing, and ultimately some detailing of structural steel and concrete foundations for industrial and material handling facilities. This also includes preparing data and running CADD software programs to develop both 3D and 2D designs. Engineering phases and duties would include conceptual engineering through operational phase support. This also includes coordinating with other design team members of other project disciplines to accomplish project tasks. In addition, the Senior Structural Designer will be part of the project management process, which would include working directly with the Project Manager, meeting with clients, participating in project meetings, establishing project standards and assisting in the development of the project design criteria.
Job Duties:
· Handle multiple project assignments with competing priorities and competing deadlines;
· Assess priorities with input from the project management teams and supervisor and stay on task in the midst of a multi-project environment;
· Perform Conceptual and Preliminary design, including quantity estimates related to industrial and bulk material projects;
· Coordinate and direct drafters and designers in the creation of 3D models and drawings.
· Interface with Project Managers, Engineers and clients;
· Assist Project Managers and design team with assembling the methodology for completing the design project effort;
· Review and check engineer's sketches and designs to ensure feasibility and compliance with client specifications, industry standards, applicable regulations and any other specification on a particular project;
· Analyze designs for efficiency of construction, use of materials, structural integrity and practicality of design;
· Check drawings and other documents. Verify correctness of design and engineering data to verify completeness of the documents;
· Develop or alter standard project specification to meet specific project requirements;
· Create layouts and sketches for project systems;
· Develop project design criteria documents;
· Research, learn and implement differing design techniques which may be industry specific;
· Draft structural technical details and specify dimensions, materials, and procedures using drawings, rough sketches, specifications and calculations using CADD software as directed by design team members as needed.
· Execute on the philosophy that the 3D model is a controlling deliverable to the project and maximize the extraction of 2D drawing content from the model.
· Assist in development of engineering proposals.
· Further develop concepts established by sales personnel.
· Consider mechanical, civil and electrical components of total project system to allow account for those aspects in the project or area design.
· Perform 3D modeling of structural systems in all of the core CADD software packages as the projects dictate: AutoCAD Plant 3D, AdvancedSteel, REVIT, and any requirements dictated by the company.
· Review certain vendor/fabricator shop drawings.
· Maintain project files per established Company standards and procedures.
· Perform the necessary field work to obtain accurate information for the design.
· Attend out of office and in office project meetings.
· In some instances, interface directly with Clients.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
· Associates Degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design or equivalent;
· At least ten (10) years' experience in preparation of structural designs in heavy plant system design environment using Computer Aided Drafting and Design software required;
· Experience with bulk material transport and storage systems preferred;
· Experience in directing the work of drafters or other engineering support staff;
· Familiarity with total project systems to include mechanical, civil and electrical components to allow considerations of those aspects into a project or area design;
· Strong written and verbal communications skills;
· Requires knowledge and ability to work with MS Office Suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
· Knowledge of drafting standards, mathematics, science, and engineering technology;
· Knowledge of traditional drafting and 3D modeling techniques;
· Ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels;
· Availability and the ability to work on multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines simultaneously;
· Availability and ability to travel to client sites on occasion;
· Availability and ability to work overtime as needed based on project.
Working Conditions:
· Interaction with other team members, as well as supervisors and client personnel;
· May be required to travel out of town on a periodic basis to obtain project field data or attend project meetings;
· Field duties may require outdoor work in a plant, facility or terminal environment;
· Working in plant and/or shop areas around production machinery with extreme noise levels;
· Must be able to wear safety equipment as required by the safety department for personal protection;
· May be at more than one job site in a day and must be able to tolerate climate changes.
