The Safety & Industrial Hygiene team is responsible for ensuring the safety and health of personnel. This is done through hazard assessment and mitigation, engineering control measures, continual improvement efforts, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The Team is comprised of safety professionals that work together to support the needs of the operating divisions and to create a strong safety culture within the organization.
Objectives of this Role:
Perform assessments of potential workplace hazards in research & development programs and implement strategies to reduce personnel exposures and accidents.
Conduct project reviews with a focus on Process Safety Management, hazard assessment and mitigation through engineering controls.
Drive improvements in SwRI's safety programs for comprehensive employee protection.
Work with a team to implement Institute safety and health programs and ensure regulatory compliance.
A focus area of this position will be to evaluate chemical Pilot Plant designs and processes as well as evaluate complex hazards and material compatibilities.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
Conduct, facilitate, or participate in workplace and project risk assessments to identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks.
Prepare and coordinate training on risk analysis techniques as applicable. (Examples include HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA, etc.)
Oversee implementation of Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements when required and work with Program Managers to enact PSM best practices in projects that do not meet the PSM thresholds.
Using a knowledge of chemistry and physics, assess projects to ensure mitigation of hazardous conditions, evaluate chemicals involved in processes to confirm that materials being used are compatible and personnel are protected from any emissions or exposures.
Assist Incident Investigation teams in investigating and classifying safety incidents, as well as providing support in the development of process tools and action plans to close identified Process Safety gaps.
Provide Emergency Response support as required.
Develop and conduct safety training for Institute Staff on process safety and OSHA requirements.
Requirements:
Requires a Bachelors degree in Process Safety; Occupational Health and Safety; Industrial Hygiene; Mechanical Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Petroleum Engineering; Chemistry; Biology; Public Health; or related degree with relevant work experience.
Preferred but not required: Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) Process Safety Professional Certification; Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) Associate Safety Professional; BCSP Certified Safety Professional; Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) license.
2 years: Experience in Process Safety Management, Hazard Analyses, OSHA compliance and/or Industrial Hygiene,
2 years: Requires knowledge of chemistry and how it will impact processes and potential personnel exposures.
2 years: Strong background in chemical & engineering principles and integrated risk assessments covering safety, health and environmental protection.
A valid/clear driver's license is required.
