Job Description:


  1. Lead and manage the Maintenance Department.

  2. Ensure that all millwrights work safely and adhere to all safety policies, including wearing required protective equipment at all times and strictly following lockout procedures.

  3. Ensure that contractors receive a copy of, are aware of and comply with all Contractor Rules.

  4. Ensure that meaningful, clear, concise daily scheduling of all maintenance personnel on all shifts is accomplished at the beginning of each shift.

  5. Ensure that productive, brief “huddles” are conducted for all maintenance department personnel on duty (millwrights, electricians, truck shop mechanics and boiler operators – no exceptions) at the beginning of each shift.

  6. Maintain effective working relationships with all production superintendents, supervisors, and support staff.

  7. Coordinate with production superintendents on a regular basis to determine if maintenance performed in their departments is being completed in a timely and professional manner. Then provide feedback, counseling, training, discipline, etc. to the lead person, supervisors and/or crew members as appropriate.

  8. Communicate daily with lead person/supervisors regarding accomplishments and problems encountered on the last shift and challenges and scheduling on the next shift.

  9. Randomly evaluate hourly team members’ technical performance and give feedback, counseling, training, discipline, etc. to supervisors and/or the hourly team member as appropriate.

  10. Participate in candidate interviewing, selection, hiring, and orientation.

  11. Monitor long-term professional development of Maintenance Dept team members and ensure that they receive appropriate training; annually update the formal Maintenance Dept Training Schedule (that is included in the annual budget package) and then ensure that it is executed; the training schedule will include training for non-maintenance personnel who wish to learn maintenance skills for future job opportunities.

  12. Ensure that the Preventative Maintenance Program is kept up-to-date and executed properly.

  13. Spearhead movement starting in 2003 to involve operators in routine preventative maintenance programs with the intention of shifting primary responsibility for equipment maintenance to operators.

  14. Assist in the training of production operators in their maintenance responsibilities and then follow-up to ensure that they perform as expected.

  15. Always search for and propose equipment/operation changes that will increase profits.

  16. Participate in capital improvement projects including helping plan and design modifications and additions to the plant, and supervising installations by contractors and/or mill personnel. Ensure that assigned capital projects are completed in a timely manner and within budgets amounts.

  17. Enlist the services of outside vendors/specialists as needed.

  18. Participate in the preparation of the annual budget, including preparing of detailed estimates of department staffing, man-hours by job, overtime hour targets by job, and parts and supplies costs; also includes update of professional training schedule for the Maint Dept.

  19. Ensure that budgeted maintenance department man-hour and overtime % targets are achieved.

  20. Assist the Purchasing Manager in determining proper inventory level targets, economic order quantities, and reorder levels; also assist the PM in the development of specifications and the ordering of equipment, parts, and supplies when needed.

  21. Ensure that all blueprints and schematics are kept up-to-date; also ensure that print files are neat and orderly at all times.

  22. Ensure that department team members are aware of, understand, and follow all company policies and procedures.

  23. Ensure that department team members receive monthly safety training.

  24. Ensure that new team member orientations are properly completed.

  25. Ensure that new team member performance evaluations are completed as required throughout the 90-day new team member probationary period.

  26. Ensure that time sheets are completed daily.

  27. Ensure that all required paperwork is completed neatly and accurately and is submitted on time.

  28. Ensure that all area of responsibilities for housekeeping are maintained and kept in a neat and orderly manner.
