Description:

Winthrop University invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Chemistry with expertise in organic or inorganic fields, especially with emphasis in green/environmental chemistry, for employment to begin August 2025. The Department of Chemistry, Physics, Geology, and the Environment (https://www.winthrop.edu/cas/chemistry/) hosts ACS-approved and ASBMB-accredited undergraduate programs in chemistry and biochemistry, focused on inclusive excellence and year-round, national-caliber undergraduate research. The successful candidate will join a collegial environment that includes 10 other full-time chemistry/biochemistry faculty and two support scientists housed in modern facilities, with excellent instrumentation for teaching and research. Opportunity exists to join faculty teams in ongoing NIH INBRE Biomedical Science and NSF EPSCoR Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning research initiatives and to collaborate with colleagues working in environmental and materials science fields.Review of applications will begin on October 25, 2024. Major Responsibilities


  1. Serve as a research mentor in an established, year-round undergraduate research program that prepares students from diverse groups for PhD programs in the chemical/biochemical sciences.

  2. Develop and teach undergraduate organic chemistry and/or inorganic chemistry lectures and labs; teach advanced courses in areas of expertise/interest.

  3. Teach in the general chemistry program for science majors.

  4. Develop grant proposals to support student research and curricular interests.

  5. Provide service to students, the department, university, and scientific community.

Qualifications:



  1. Exceptional interpersonal skills and strong personal ethics for mentorship of students, for working in a team-oriented environment, and for sparking enthusiasm for chemistry.

  2. PhD in chemistry or closely related discipline required. Post-doctoral or equivalent experience preferred.

  3. Strong background and demonstrated experience or ability to teach undergraduate organic or inorganic chemistry is required, especially with expertise in green/environmental chemistry.

  4. Demonstrated passion for directing year-round undergraduate chemistry research projects, participating in an established, national-caliber undergraduate research program, and effectively mentoring students from underrepresented groups.

  5. Recent research publications in a chemical science preferred.

  6. Expertise in an area that matches department interests and complements current strengths. Department interests include green/environmental chemistry, bioanalytical/biophysical chemistry, materials science, computational chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and chemical biology. Preference will be given to candidates who have expertise in green/environmental chemistry as complementary strength.

  7. Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor requires commensurate experience and credentials at the level of Associate or higher.
