Join us and play your part in something special! This position will be responsible for managing a team of IT employees possessing varied experience levels. This position participates in the planning and managing of activities within the assigned business unit/area.
As a manager of our software deliver teams for our personal lines underwriting platform, you will work with the leadership team to provide input on strategy and architecture of all associated systems within the division. You will lead and develop software engineering staff as well as team leads. You will be responsible for oversight of all aspects of technology support and development of the division's applications.
Responsibilities
Lead a team of high performing developers with experience in enterprise application development, microservices, and full stack systems
Manage the delivery teams through the full SDLC process in an Agile environment
Work with architects to design and implement cloud-native applications
Contribute to strategic and operational business goals as a member of the management team
Ensures on-time project delivery, provides budget update/information and informs management of any deviations which may impact the project outcome
Involved with recruitment, development, retention, and organization of all managed staff in accordance with corporate budgetary and policy requirements, including offshore resources
Plans and conducts performance reviews for employees
Initiates discussions around raises, bonuses, and promotions within the team
Defines team operating standards and ensures essential procedures are followed at all times
Partner with Product Owners and Engagement Managers to deliver robust solutions to complex problems
Trains, coaches, and mentors employees on the team
Builds a culture of innovation and learning among your team
Responsible for tracking and reporting key metrics and status updates to senior management
Occasionally required to work late evening and weekends as needed.
Up to 10% travel as needed.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, other related field or equivalent work experience, including military experience
Certification
Insurance certifications or affiliation with industry group a plus
Work Experience
10+ years application development (.Net, React, Java, JS, etc.), cloud architecture, project delivery and IT governance experience
5+ years Agile project delivery methods, DevOps, and test automation preferred
2+ years leading development teams, providing coaching and mentoring to team members
Insurance industry background preferred
Guidewire Policy Center or Duck Creek Policy experience preferred
Skillset
Strong knowledge of technologies and methodologies related to assigned business unit/area
Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
A natural leader and team player with the ability to enable change and motivate staff
Ability to successfully gather technical information and transform into clear and concise communication material
Strong desire for continuous improvement
Proven ability to effectively lead, coach and develop staff
Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to interact with all levels of Markel's internal and external business partners
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, attention to detail, sensitivity to time management and deadlines
Displays confidence when working with and convincing all levels of employees
