Job Description


PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Intern, Interpreting functions as an entry-level professional interpreter for students, faculty, staff and administration that are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in order to maintain institutional compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Interpreting Interns strive to advance in sign language skill proficiency in order to provide high quality interpreting services. Interpreting Interns support and promote all persons' right to communication equity in learning and workplace environments.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


    Provides Sign Language interpretation (voice and signing) and related Sign Language formats:for clients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearingin various Lone Star College locations and settingsat the appropriate language and register level
Analyzes source language content, meaning, and intent to accurately deliver information to the target audienceCommunicates client information, client status, and any concerns or challenges to supervisorActively researches situations involving new, technical, or complex information to gain an understanding of what will/may be interpretedCommitment to accepted courses or assignments for the duration of the semester.Ethically models positive and inclusive behavior


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:


    Basic fluency in both Sign Language and English with the ability to have a grasp of both the source and the target languages. Knowledge of the structure and content of Sign Language and English, including the meaning and spelling of words and an understanding of the rules of composition and grammarAbility to understand and adhere to LSC Policy on Students with Disability Rights, FERPA rules of the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, and other related federal, state, and local regulationsKnowledge of the Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct as adopted by the Texas Health and Human Services CommissionBasic knowledge of the Deaf culture and the Deaf communityAbility to maintain a professional and friendly attitude and to quickly develop a rapport with a wide variety of peopleStrong interpersonal and communication skillsAbility to maintain confidentiality and discretion


PHYSICAL ABILITIES:


    Uses fingers (fine finger dexterity), hands and arms to communicate using Sign Language for assigned periods of timeSpecific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision depth perception, and ability to adjust focusSitting, standing, and walking around is often required in order to maintain line of sight with clients as well as to provide services in certain settings (i.e. campus tours)Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound


WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:


    Interpreting assignments can occur at a variety of times and locations within the LSC service area, including some evening and weekend assignmentsWork is performed in a variety of environments, mostly in climate-controlled office, classroom, meeting and convention environments with minimal exposure to safety hazards. May include indoor and/or outdoor laboratory environments with exposure to inclement weather, dust, dirt, etc. May include work in close quarters (e.g., simulated or real truck-driving cab) as well as providing remote services


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


    Enrollment in qualified Interpreter Training Program with completion of appropriate classes and hours to have reached the internship/practicum phase of the programAbility to pass a basic skills screening with a member of the ASR Interpreting teamReliable mode of transportation to travel between assignments within the LSC Service Area
Salary

Hourly Pay Rate is $17.06.
