The Department of Psychology at Christopher Newport University invites applications for one Lecturer position in Psychology, effective August 2025.
This position is a full-time, non-tenure-track appointment with a nominal teaching load of 4-4. Area of specialization is open, and the Department is particularly interested in candidates whose experiences contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. Applicants must be committed to a teacher-scholar model by showing the potential for outstanding teaching and the ability to engage undergraduate students in research. Applicants must also be prepared to effectively mentor/advise undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds. Teaching responsibilities would include teaching one of our core courses in introductory psychology, statistics, or research methods and courses in the candidates' areas of expertise.
A doctoral degree in Psychology or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Lecturer. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank, and ABD candidates who will not hold the doctorate by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. The initial appointment is for one year and subsequently renewable on a three-year cycle. Promotion to an advanced Lecturer rank with longer-term reappointments is possible.
The Department of Psychology at Christopher Newport University includes 19 members who are dedicated teachers/scholars and actively engaged in research and advising/mentoring students, while working in a collegial atmosphere. The Department seeks to recruit and retain a diverse community of scholars. The successful applicant will join a team of faculty that integrates high quality teaching and significant research involving undergraduates. The Department has 577 students (480 majors and 97 minors), constituting approximately 14% of all students at CNU. The Department is housed in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences in the 21st century Mary Brock Forbes integrated science center with state-of-the-art teaching and research spaces. The Department supports and works collaboratively with the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program and the Master of Arts in Teaching program. In 2024, US News and World Reports ranked CNU's Psychology program among the "Best Undergraduate Psychology Programs" in the nation.
