Site location: Danville, IL VA medical Center

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend or holiday shifts as required.


Position Summary:

The VA Illiana Healthcare System is seeking a skilled Histopathology Technician to join our Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Danville VA Medical Center. This position requires expertise in laboratory procedures related to Cytology and Surgical Pathology. The ideal candidate will be responsible for processing, analyzing, and maintaining the quality of biological specimens, performing instrument calibration, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality control standards.


Core Responsibilities:

• Accession and receive biological samples into the VA laboratory information system for in-house testing or dispatch to reference laboratories.

• Prepare specimens for analysis while ensuring the physiological integrity of specimen properties is maintained.

• Edit and verify lab results recorded in the computer system for accuracy.

• Maintain and stock specialized laboratory supplies necessary for daily operations.

• Perform a full range of laboratory procedures in Cytology and Surgical Pathology, following established protocols.

• Calibrate, standardize, and maintain laboratory instruments, conducting quality control checks, identifying problems, and performing simple repairs as needed.

• Perform validation studies on laboratory equipment and maintain accurate records for quality control and assurance programs.

• Collect and report data for Quality Assurance programs, including compliance with Joint Commission standards.

• Communicate with clinics and healthcare providers about specimen adequacy, labeling issues, or other collection-related concerns.

• Participate in VISN technical committees for Cytology and Anatomical Pathology.

• Develop partnerships with local funeral homes and monitor compliance with onsite morgue protocols.

• Manage records for the Histology department, ensuring organization and compliance with federal and local guidelines.

• Communicate with Decedent's Affairs and complete necessary paperwork.

• Perform frozen section procedures when required.

• Monitor and ensure temperature compliance in histology areas.


Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Education: Certificate/Associate's degree in Histotechnology or a related field
  • Certification: Histopathology Technician (HT) certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certification. (Preferred)
  • Shall be certified in Basic Life Support BLS (CPR). Certifications must be obtained or issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), an organization recognized by the AHA, or Military Training Network (MTN) and maintained during their work at the VA.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience in histopathology or related laboratory settings.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems and specimen handling.
  • Strong understanding of quality control procedures and compliance standards (e.g., Joint Commission).
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Attention to detail with excellent record-keeping and data entry skills.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with healthcare providers and other departments.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
