In this exciting role as an Automation and Controls Engineer you will be part of the manufacturing engineering team at the Nathan Lane site supporting production of Stents, balloon Catheters and precision cut metal products. This role will provide focused support for automated manufacturing equipment and will entail both daily production stability and project work. Daily support ensures key performance metrics are being met, and project work focuses on continuous improvement and includes new technology integration, new software and controls, and equipment/tooling redesign. We are looking for a technically competent, ambitious individual with a strong automation background.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • With Engineering, Operations, and Quality to produce conceptual mechanical designs with a strong level of understanding of Electrical and Software controls

  • Serve as Tier 3 support to existing equipment on site (help spec out replacements, diagnose problems and update programs etc )

  • Support development and design of process development equipment for proof of concept work

  • Generate clear and detailed Equipment and Software specifications based on Process needs

  • Collaborate with external equipment vendors during the build, development, Testing, and validation of Automation equipment

  • Collaborate and partner with internal stakeholders in Operations, Quality, and Engineering to ensure alignment on objectives , strategy, and goals

  • Drive Testing and validation of Automation Equipment software prior to Production Release

  • Provides technical support to the manufacturing equipment repair and process engineering organizations.


  • Oversees the installation, modification, upgrade and maintenance of manufacturing equipment.

  • Deploy and strategize the equipment communication and data flow for equipment OEE, upcoming MES deployment and historical process data

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

  • PLC programming experience

  • Robot programming

Nice to Have

  • BS degree in Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Significant automation design experience.

  • Proficiency in PLC and HMI (Allen Bradley, Beckhoff ), vision system (Cognex, Keyence) and data acquisition systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of custom equipment design including automated, servo-mechanical, electromechanical, and/or optical systems

  • Significant experience with medium volume assembly and test equipment technologies, including validation protocols (IQ / OQ / PQ / MSA)

  • Production support experience

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$140,800.00 - $211,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
