Summary
Precisely and accurately performs a variety of routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures. Follows standard operating procedures for the grossing of small specimens, quality control, and quality assurance. Serves as a resource and provides bench supervision when needed, to others in the department. Meets schedules, priority demands, and deadlines. Demonstrates flexibility and versatility in coordinating tasks. Takes on special projects.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution;
Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or with a current H.T. or M.L.T.
3+ years of laboratory experience at a hospital or private laboratory.
Proficiency with microtomes, tissue processors, stainers, and equipment used to produce a stained slide suitable for a diagnosis by a pathologist.

Responsibilities
Describes, measures, and inks specimens according to specified protocols.
Embeds tissues accurately to produce sections that appropriately demonstrate cells.
Microtomy is artifact free.
Staining procedures are accurate and precise, resulting in a diagnostic slide.
Cassettes and slides are accurately labeled with two patient identifiers, accession number and patient name.
Operates and maintains computer and laboratory equipment according to DDA and laboratory procedures.
Performs Q/C and Q/A documentation as required.
Utilizes and stores supplies efficiently. Notifies supervisor when additional supplies are needed.
Prioritizes tasks for the efficient use of laboratory resources and technician time.
Files blocks and slides.
Disposes of hazardous chemicals per regulatory guidelines.
Follows safety regulations set by OSHA and CAP guidelines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
