The Energy Delivery and Customer Solutions (EDCS) sector conducts a broad range of technology research for electric utilities related to the delivery of electricity. This position will work in a team environment to technically lead and manage research, testing, and demonstrations associated with the challenges faced by utilities design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of telecommunications systems. This position will be responsible for designing, leading, and executing research projects to address these challenges.
This position is responsible for working directly with utility personnel and technology companies to carry out research projects and testing, working toward a future of integrated telecommunications networks that can meet existing and future requirements. In addition to technical aspects, responsibilities include scheduling, budgeting, and management of contractors.
This is an opportunity for an experienced professional to become part of EPRI’s Information and Communication Technology research team, focusing on data networking and telecommunications.
Job Functions:
Lead the telecommunications lab in Knoxville, helping to define the development of capabilities to assist utilities in their telecom testing and technology evaluations. Testing may be conducted in the lab or in the field at utility sites. Produce technical reports that document results of testing activities. Produce research reports on topics that, in addition to testing, may also rely on collaborative investigation with utility member advisors, the vendor community, and standards development organizations.
Required Expertise includes:
Knowledge and experience with telecommunication technologies used for automation and controls networks (utilities, critical infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing, etc.)
Knowledge and experience with IT and OT networks, and IT/OT convergence
Knowledge and experience with IP Networking and routing (IPv4 and IPv6)
Knowledge and experience with network performance testing techniques and tools
Familiarity with Network Management Systems (NMS) and Network Operation Centers (NOC)
Familiarity with WAN protocols – SONET, MPLS, MPLS-TP, Carrier Ethernet, NG-OTN
Familiarity with security protocols – VPNs, IPSEC, VPLS, etc
Familiarity with Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV)
Familiarity with telecommunications infrastructure lifecycle management processes/practices in the energy and utilities sector.
This position requires a strong proficiency in written and verbal communication skills to produce quality written technical reports, updates, and whitepapers that explain the research conducted and document results. The position may also represent EPRI in a variety of forums, public speaking and presenting regarding the needs that have been identified, the research conducted, and results.
The ideal candidate will:
Have extensive experience in telecommunications and networking for the electric power industry, or related industries.
Have ability to design and implement software for testing and analytics.
Be well connected and recognized within this community of utility and vendor personnel
Have technical expertise in telecommunication systems and equipment, both with the installed base as well as new and emerging technologies.
Have familiarity with utility telecommunications systems and practices, especially for emergency and recovery operations.
Have knowledge and understanding of voice, video, and data communication and networking standards.
Able to write software to implement protocols and develop test plans and scripts for telecom systems.
Have impeccable communication, writing and presentation skills with a proven ability to communicate complex science and technical issues in a way that can influence both the technical community and the business leaders in the Electricity Sector.
Demonstrates project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Education Level and Years of Experience:
BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science required.
5+ years of experience in the related field is required. 10+ years preferred.

The EPRI telecommunication project set 161G is part of the Information and Communication Technology program. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to make a notable and lasting contribution to this increasingly essential aspect of electric utility operations.
The salary range for this position is $109,250 USD to $128,100 USD annually.This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program.
