About the Department



GSECARS is one of three sectors managed by the University of Chicago Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (CARS) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory. GSECARS is a national user facility for synchrotron radiation research in earth, planetary, and environmental science.



Job Summary



The Center for Advanced Radiation Sources at the University of Chicago seeks applications for a Research Technician to help support earth and environmental science focused synchrotron radiation research. The position will be located at GSECARS, Sector 13, The Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory.



Responsibilities



  • Fabricate and assemble parts to be used in high-pressure experiments. Requires detailed and precise work.


  • Participate in fabrication, assembly, installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of experimental hardware.


  • Help with experiment setups, equipment repairs and simple fabrication requests when called upon.


  • Operate in-house fabrication equipment to build components for beamline and experiment instrumentation using the CARS machine shop, CNC mills, 3D printers and related fabrication methods.


  • Provides technical support for research projects.


  • Assists with the installation, set-up of experiments, interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.


  • Under a limited degree of supervision, provides technical support in the development, analysis, and maintenance of engineering processes, products, or equipment.


  • Assembles, tests, and repairs electronic and production equipment, machinery, systems, and units. Evaluates the performance and reliability of a prototype or production model.


  • Performs other related work as needed.





Minimum Qualifications




Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:



  • College degree.





Technical Knowledge or Skills:



  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).


  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals and instructions.


  • Familiarity with basic hand and power tools.


  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds.


  • Minimal outdoor work.


  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings such as SolidWorks 3D drawings.


  • Proficient with machine shop equipment (CNC milling machines, drill press, lathe).


  • Knowledge of high and ultrahigh vacuum techniques.


  • Knowledge of fluid flow and pneumatic control systems.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.


  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.





Working Conditions



  • This on-site position is based at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory.


  • Must be able to ascend ladders and work in narrow spaces.
