Assistant Teaching Professor of Theatre & Dance (Lighting Design)
The Department of Theatre & Performance is committed to preserving, transmitting, and expanding our understanding of Theatre and Dance within the larger context of a liberal arts education. A hallmark of the department's mission is the active integration of scholarly and artistic work in both courses and productions. The disciplinary relationship between Theatre and Dance offers a unique environment in which to explore and study performance and production from a multi-disciplinary and collaborative perspective. Students are offered a course of study designed to develop creative potential, foster inventive thought, and contribute to an appreciation of humankind's artistic, intellectual, and cultural heritage.
The Department is committed, through its productions, to providing cultural resources for university and community audiences, including classical and contemporary works that challenge and integrate commercial theatre and dance. The disciplines of Theatre and Dance, because of their ever-evolving nature, are particularly well‑equipped to prepare students to be highly responsive in rapidly changing environments both within and outside of these disciplines.
The Department of Theatre & Performance at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a 3-year, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor of Theatre & Performance instructional position that will begin August 10, 2025. This full-time teaching faculty appointment carries a service component commensurate with rank and comes with the possibility of ongoing renewals and a framework for promotion.
We seek an individual with expertise in lighting design. The successful applicant will be expected to be an effective teacher and will have a [3-3] teaching load.
We seek an individual with expertise in Lighting for Theatre and Dance. The Theatre & Performance Lighting Design teaching faculty member is responsible for providing courses in Lighting Design and other topics in technical theatre. The teaching faculty member will also contribute to design and implement lighting for some departmental Main Stage productions as part of their teaching load. Some background or experience in sound design and/or multimedia/digital design is welcome but not required. The teaching load is 3/3 with a course reduction each semester for mainstage production support. Duties may also include sound design or multimedia design depending on areas of expertise.
Other responsibilities include advising, student mentorship, curriculum development, maintaining professional affiliations as appropriate, and other responsibilities as assigned.
