Unit Mission Statement:

The Department of Theatre & Performance is committed to preserving, transmitting, and expanding our understanding of Theatre and Dance within the larger context of a liberal arts education. A hallmark of the department's mission is the active integration of scholarly and artistic work in both courses and productions. The disciplinary relationship between Theatre and Dance offers a unique environment in which to explore and study performance and production from a multi-disciplinary and collaborative perspective. Students are offered a course of study designed to develop creative potential, foster inventive thought, and contribute to an appreciation of humankind's artistic, intellectual, and cultural heritage.


The Department is committed, through its productions, to providing cultural resources for university and community audiences, including classical and contemporary works that challenge and integrate commercial theatre and dance. The disciplines of Theatre and Dance, because of their ever-evolving nature, are particularly well‑equipped to prepare students to be highly responsive in rapidly changing environments both within and outside of these disciplines.


Position Summary:

The Department of Theatre & Performance at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a 3-year, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor of Theatre & Performance instructional position that will begin August 10, 2025. This full-time teaching faculty appointment carries a service component commensurate with rank and comes with the possibility of ongoing renewals and a framework for promotion.


We seek an individual with expertise in Acting, Directing, and Voice Training. The successful applicant will be expected to be an effective teacher and will have a [3-3] teaching load.


The Theatre & Performance Acting teaching faculty member is responsible for providing courses in Acting and Voice Training at all levels, including introduction to acting, as well as other courses that support the major and in their areas of expertise. These courses might include Shakespeare, Film Acting, Devising, Intimacy Direction and Consent, Script Analysis, Dialect Training, Voice for the Actor, Trauma-Informed Actor Training, or others. They are also the academic advisor for many undergraduate students. They may also support our active production season in their area(s) of expertise. Duties may also include directing for the department's main season productions. Candidates with professional and/or academic acting and directing experience are encouraged to indicate that in their submission materials.


Faculty will engage in making active contributions to departmental committees, curriculum development, student advising, maintaining professional affiliations as appropriate, and other responsibilities as assigned.


Required Qualifications:



  • An MFA from an accredited institution is required at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2025).

  • Applicants should have at least one year of university teaching experience and/or professional credits as a performer and/or director uniquely suited to support performance training.

  • Demonstration of effective teaching and mentorship.

  • Actor training expertise in Stanislavsky and any of the following: Laban, Lecoq, Uta Hagen, Michael Chekhov, Grotowski, or other established actor training methods.

  • Voice training expertise in any of the following: Kristin Linklater, Patsy Rodenberg, Cicely Berry, Lessac Kinesensics, Knight Thompson Speechwork, or other established voice training methods.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with Intimacy Direction/Choreography.

  • Ability to teach courses in another area of performance expertise such as: Shakespeare, Film Acting, Devising, Avant Garde Performance, Physical Theatre, African-American Theatre, Asian-American Theatre, Latinx Theatre, World Theatre, Theatre History, Script Analysis, or others.

  • Two or more years of professional teaching experience in Higher Education.

  • Theatre Directing experience.

  • Evidence of commitment to inclusive teaching.
