Scope of Position:


The Comprehensive Cancer Center- Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute is committed to providing high quality cancer services in detection, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Cancer Support Services and Survivorship Program provides a broad range of multidisciplinary supportive services for oncology patients, caregivers and families. The program focuses on the vast and persistent impact of the diagnosis of cancer on the adult survivor. This includes the potential impact on the physical, mental and emotional health, social and family relationships, professional and personal identity, spirituality, sexuality and financial standing.



The Psychiatric Counselor is a direct patient care position addressing aspects of cancer related distress. The majority of work tasks are complex; independent judgment and skills are required. The Psychiatric Counselor is responsible for providing comprehensive psychosocial interventions in the Psychosocial Oncology department within the multimodality Cancer Supportive Care Clinic at The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. The department operates Monday-Friday typically during the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m.





Position Summary:


The Psychiatric Counselor in Psychosocial Oncology is responsible for providing psychotherapeutic interventions to individuals, couples and families who are living with cancer. The position is responsible for completing DSM-5 diagnostic assessments and the creation, implementation, and evaluation of a therapeutic treatment plan with evidence-based counseling interventions. The position requires special knowledge, skills, and competencies relating to the psychosocial impact of a cancer diagnosis along the cancer continuum including diagnosis, treatment, remission, survivorship, recurrence, end-of-life care, as well as couples and family interventions, sexual health and intimacy issues, parenting through cancer. Interventions may include:


· Diagnostic assessment and treatment planning


· Individual counseling


· Couples/family counseling


· Group counseling


· Psychoeducation


· Assistance with case management, referrals and healthcare navigation


· Crisis Intervention



Knowledge of substance use disorders, and provision of individual alcohol and other drug (AOD) interventions, harm reduction, and health promotion interventions; these are patient-centered interventions to help initiate and maintain positive behavior change, and to empower patients with the information necessary to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.



Additionally applies knowledge of crisis intervention, financial counseling, discharge planning, health education and the provision of material resources and linkage with community agencies. Social work services are provided to patients/families to meet their medically related social and emotional needs as they impact on their medical condition, treatment, recovery and safe transition from one care environment to another. Core competencies include: Psychosocial assessment, counseling and crisis intervention skills, Knowledge of the PASAAR process for extended care facility placement and the assessment and counseling processes involved, knowledge of home healthcare set-up process and skills assessing neglect/abuse, including substance abuse and domestic violence.





Minimum Qualifications



For Hire:


1.) Master of Social Work from an accredited Graduate School of Social Work.


2.) State of Ohio Social Work Board Licensure to practice independently (LISW, LISW-S) required.


3.) Previous experience working in healthcare settings, and/or psychotherapy interventions desired.


4.) Upon hire, initial and ongoing credentialing approval within OSUMC hospital and payor institutions required.



On going: Meet mandatory education and health surveillance requirements. Demonstrates competence in technical, interpersonal, and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions.
