The Anthropology Department seeks a Bioarchaeologist at the Assistant/Associate Professor level with expertise in human biology and health and with a research program that emphasizes collaborative and engaged research. We seek a scholar whose research agenda centers ethical and restorative approaches to human remains and human biological data, is defined by collaboration with local and/or indigenous communities, and deploys innovative techniques and approaches. The candidate is expected to establish and run a productive lab, supervise advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and develop collaborations with descendant communities (or the appropriate equivalent) as well as natural and social science research groups on campus. While geographic area of interest is open, we seek a candidate with expertise in technical and/or topical areas such as human osteology, disease, inequality, colonialism, diaspora studies, migration, ancient DNA, epigenetics, microbiome, stable isotopes, or data science. This position represents a critical bridge within Anthropology, serving growing needs in undergraduate and graduate programs in Archaeology, Human Biology, Medical Anthropology, and Sociocultural Anthropology (including our robust concentration in Race, Difference and Power). The successful candidate is expected to bring a set of technical skills and a positive high profile research agenda.

The Department of Anthropology at UNC Chapel Hill fosters an environment where multiple approaches coexist and intersect. We support studies, research, and professional applications in the three subfields of foundational training, Sociocultural Anthropology, Human Biology, Ecology and Evolution; and Archaeology one cross-disciplinary program in Medical Anthropology and a concentration focused on Race, Difference and Power. The goals of this approach are to permit crosscutting research on the part of faculty and students, to encourage engagement with other programs and interdisciplinary units on campus and to allow interest groups to form around particular problems as they emerge. Within this larger, open structure, the department maintains strong collective interest in issues of globalization, nature and the environment, public anthropology, cultural studies and political economy. It also features strong collective interest in the regional study of North America (particularly the southern United States), Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as Europe and Asia (particularly Southeast Asia). None of these interests are exclusive, however, and faculty members work on a variety of topics in a variety of settings.
This Tenure Track Assistant/Associate Professor will teach graduate and undergraduate courses and conduct research in the field of Bioarchaeology. This position will set up and run a productive lab, supervising advanced undergraduate and graduate students and to develop collaborations with descendant communities (or appropriate equivalent) as well as natural and social science research groups on campus.
A PhD in Anthropology or related field and experience teaching at the college level.
Candidates must have an active research program and demonstrated potential, in the form of publications and other scholarly activity. Candidates must be experienced teachers willing to work closely with undergraduate and graduate students.
