The Department of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor to begin on 7/1/25. As the largest unit on campus, the College of Arts and Sciences is the academic heart of the Carolina experience. The College consists of 43 academic departments and curricula and numerous programs, centers and institutes. It is home to more than 18,000 undergraduate students, including all of the University's first-year and second-year students. About 2,300 graduate students study and teach in the College. The Department of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies is a transnational program that emphasizes the histories, cultures, cultural linkages, and contemporary sociopolitical and economic realities of Africa and the African Diasporas in the context of a globalizing world. We approach these areas of study from multiple perspectives, and as an interdisciplinary program, our faculty are trained in the fields of anthropology, film, history, international development studies, linguistics, literature, music, and political science. The department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration either in African Studies or African American and Diaspora Studies. We also offer several undergraduate minors, as well as language instruction in Swahili, Wolof, and Yoruba. In the fall of 2025, the Department will welcome its inaugural cohort of graduate students as it launches its PhD program in Africana Studies.
The tenure-track assistant or associate professor position will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct research in their disciplinary field and/or interdisciplinary areas of expertise, and participate in departmental service. The current department teaching load is two courses per semester. The faculty member will show promise of research excellence and a desire to train and work with a diverse body of students. The service portion includes, but is not limited to, student advising and mentoring, committee assignments, and participation in other departmental initiatives.
Ph.D. in a disciplinary or interdisciplinary field related to African Studies.
Training in geography, political science, history, and/or cultural studies and whose work and teaching interface with Central Africa, Southern Africa, and/or the Atlantic world is preferred.
