The Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies is a National Resource Center (NRC) funded by Title VI of the US Department of Education based at UNC Chapel Hill. Funding for the NRC supports initiatives to provide educational and outreach programs at local, regional, and national levels for K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses, media, government, and the general public. Title VI and the CAS will fund the Consortium Coordinator position.
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Consortium Coordinator will support the Center's work in enhancing the statewide scope of the NC Consortium for Middle East Studies. The Consortium Coordinator will be supervised by the Center's Associate Director and will work with the Center's Director, Business Manager, Outreach Manager, and the Center's partners, UNC Area Studies Centers, Duke University Middle East Studies Center, and university and state-wide partners. The Coordinator will assist the Director and Associate Director in managing statewide events and communications. Key responsibilities of the coordinator will include preparing and distributing program materials, producing and disseminating weekly newsletters, tracking program data for federal grant reports, working with Consortium board to disburse funding and awards, and liaising with statewide partners. The coordinator will also assist the Associate Director, Outreach Manager, and Business Coordinator with event planning and execution. Position is 50% grant funded and renewal is contingent on successful application of grant in 2 years.
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Academic training in Middle Eastern Studies, Islamic Studies, International Relations, Education, or relevant experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Creative Cloud. Excellent oral and written communication, proofreading, and editing skills. Ability to work independently and follow through on multiple simultaneous projects without close supervision. Ability to interact with diverse personalities, including faculty, staff, students, state institutions, representatives of government agencies, and the general public - professionally and with discretion. Previous experience working with grants. Work effectively and productively with colleagues and contribute to a work team. Organization of work that facilitates timely and efficient completion of assigned tasks. Must have a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for travel across North Carolina.
Advanced knowledge of Middle East and Islamic history and culture. Proficiency or familiarity with a Middle Eastern language (e.g., Arabic, Persian, Turkish, etc.). Interest in the region through previous study, work experience, or travel.
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
