Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, founded in 1975, is one of 49 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country. The Center's mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach.


The UNC Tissue Procurement Facility (TPF) provides a centralized facility for the procurement, processing, storage, analysis and distribution of malignant and non-malignant tissue for use by UNC Lineberger Cancer Center Members and sponsored non-members in basic, population, translational and clinical research studies. The TPF's mission is achieved by providing investigators with a centralized, coordinated, quality-controlled, and quality-assured facility for the procurement, processing, storage, and distribution of biologic specimens.


Position Summary:

The primary purpose of this position in the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is to process blood and bone marrow samples and to isolate nucleic acids, and to act as a backup for histology services. This involves a broad range of duties including accessioning and processing biospecimen samples according to the SOPs; data entry, and record keeping for all liquid sample related projects in TPF; isolating DNA/RNA from solid tissue or blood components; processing, embedding tissues, and sectioning formalin fixed tissues; cryostat sections of frozen tissues; H&E staining; annotating blood samples as needed. The individual is also responsible for developing new assays and evaluating them.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.


Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Cellular and molecular biology experience.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Accurate data entry and attention to detail.


Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Experience with blood sample processing, and knowledge of histology are preferred. Previous clinical research experience preferred. Working experience of nucleic acid extraction preferred.


Special Physical/Mental Requirements :

Able to move at least 30 lbs. of heavy racks with or without reasonable accommodations.
