The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly skilled, dedicated, and compassionate Nurse Practitioner to join our dynamic inpatient consult team. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Consultant is an advanced practice role with expertise in the psychiatric care of geriatric patients and in the acute inpatient environment as well as in the emergency department. As a member of the psychiatric consult service this APRN provides expert-level consultation, with management recommendations, to medical, surgical, and ED providers managing geriatric patients with acute and chronic psychiatric symptoms and disorders co-morbid with their medical, and surgical conditions. In addition to patient management, this APRN provides evidence-based consultation, coaching, and education to care team members providing for these patients. This would include leading the development of educational initiatives with the goal of improving the quality, safety, and care of medical, surgical, and ED patients with co-morbid psychiatric care needs and improving staff safety and well-being as they manage such patients.
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Consultant will be responsible for the following:
Patient Management
Conducts evaluations and examinations of medical, surgical, and ED patients with co-morbid mental health issues at the request of the primary teams. Engages in independent decision-making and recommendations on clinical care (including diagnostic impressions, development of appropriate treatment plans, medications recommendations when appropriate, collaboration with other specialty consultants, etc.) within the scope of an advanced practice nurse knowledge and/or protocols of care.
Consults with physicians when medical expertise indicated outside the scope of APRN knowledge or protocols.
Collaborates with primary and multi-specialty providers as appropriate.
Provides direct psychiatric care, when appropriate, utilizing brief psychotherapeutic interventions, including motivational interviewing and supportive therapy to the geriatric population.
Identifies teaching opportunities and provides appropriate education to geriatric patients and families.
Consultation
Engages in decision-making and implementation of therapeutic plans in collaboration with other members of the health care team. Provides coaching to nursing staff on nursing care plan development.
Develops acute behavioral care plans when indicated with the input of nursing and medical colleagues.
Uses principles of leadership and management to advocate for patients and families, for optimal health care of patients, and for staff wellness.
Education & Training
Assesses educational needs of staff and provides support in real time as well as formal educational development of staff.
Develops educational programs and materials on the care and manage of the psychiatric patient on the medical services.
Provides hospital wide leadership for the S.A.F.E response.
Participates in the Department of Psychiatry QI/PI plan.
Demonstrates understanding of the legal implications of charting and documenting care.
Accepts responsibility and accountability for her/his actions in providing care to patients.
Understands the importance of ensuring patient and department safety.
Communicates effectively and establishes good rapport with patients and staff.
Develops, reviews, and updates the Department of Psychiatry clinical practice guidelines as needed.

Schedule & Location
This is a full-time, 40-hour, day shift position (Mon-Fri). This NP will work (5) 8-hour shifts per week. We are located on the NWH Main Campus at 2014 Washington Street, Newton, 02462.

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Masters required
License/Certification
Current licensure as Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
CPR Training required
Experience
3 years of Psychiatry experience (as an RN or NP) preferred
