Consistent with the university's shared services agreement with the William & Mary Foundation (WMF), this position is assigned 5% effort to support Foundation Services LLC, a subsidiary of WMF, with the responsibilities outlined below.


Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Young Guarde Philanthropy is a key member of the Reunion & Affinity Annual Giving team in the Office of Advancement at William & Mary. Alumni within their first 10 years of graduation enjoy membership in the Young Guarde, an alumni organization which provides cultural, intellectual, professional and social programs specifically designed for recent graduates and sponsors service initiatives that strengthen the bonds between William & Mary alumni and the greater communities in which they live.


Under the supervision of the Director of Reunion & Affinity Annual Giving, the Assistant Director is responsible for program strategy and management, volunteer management, and individual portfolio development and management in support of a comprehensive program for alumni affinity groups, class programs, class reunion campaigns and student and Young Guarde philanthropy. The Assistant Director assists the Director to develop and implement strategic plans to maximize dollars raised through and participation in, William & Mary's volunteer and Young Guarde programs. The Assistant Director is responsible for the management of five or more graduating classes, including one to two reunion classes, as well as overall Young Guarde programming which includes affinity-based, class-based programming and annual giving.


The Assistant Director partners with Advancement and campus partners to coordinate effective recent alumni giving and engagement opportunities; they are charged with program modification for specific classes, volunteer engagement and management, class giving and alumni philanthropy outreach to include key college-wide recent alumni and engagement events, new initiatives and unit support.


The successful Assistant Director of Young Guarde Philanthropy will be a proactive member of the talented and creative Annual Giving team, which includes Reunion & Affinity Annual Giving, Lifetime Annual Giving, Direct Marketing and Digital & Leadership Giving. The Assistant Director will be a champion for diversity and equity and will find innovative ways to incorporate diverse perspectives into all aspects of their work. This position is based in Williamsburg and is expected to work in the Advancement office in New Town, eligible to work remotely up to two days per week.

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or the equivalent combination of education, training, and or experience.

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, including, but not limited to, collaboration, staffing, and programming.

  • Experience (typically 2-4 years) working in a fast-paced office environment with an understanding of general office procedures, practices, and prioritization of workflow.

  • Understanding of volunteer engagement and its role in fundraising, with respect to confidentiality of information which relates to the donor base.

  • A desire to collaborate and lead across multiple teams.

  • Analytical, computational, and quantitative skills, with the ability to extract and analyze data, as well as produce reports in a variety of formats.

  • Analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with the demonstrated ability to resolve problems, respond to inquiries, and obtain and disseminate information.

  • Administrative and project coordination experience (typically 2-4 years) with the demonstrated ability to plan, manage and track projects through completion.

  • Proficiency with a variety of software applications to include web-based applications and MS Office (with strong skills in Word and Excel), to include creating mail-merges and develop spreadsheets with formulas and data links.

  • Excellent customer service skills, oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external constituencies, while exercising tact and diplomacy in all interactions.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities concurrently within strict deadlines.

  • The ability to develop positive, strategic working relationships among Advancement and campus partners to help in the overall fundraising initiatives of the university.

  • Desire to take initiative and develop creative solutions to assist with overall fundraising objectives for the university.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience working with database applications and CRM systems.

  • Experience working in marketing, volunteer management, and/or fundraising.

  • Strong fundraising skills with the ability to identify, qualify, and cultivate prospective donors or clients, and desire to reach aggressive goals.

  • Project management experience.

  • Experience working with boards or volunteer committees.

Advertised Pay Range:

Up to $55,000, commensurate with experience
