Position Summary

  • Install and repair linoleum and formica counter tops and backs.

  • Repair folding and sliding doors.

  • Repair, rebuild, and assist in recovering sofas.

  • Install floor and ceramic tile and base cove.

  • Repair and replace glass block and brick.

  • Repair and replace plumbing fixtures, valves, and traps.

  • Repair and replace cast iron, copper, steel, and sanitary piping.

  • Clean sewer lines, plugged stools, and drains.

  • Install new toilet stools, tanks, urinals, sinks, and related accessory fixtures.

  • Clean, adjust, and repair automatic controls, pilot lights, hot water heaters, and flex tubes in gas ranges.

  • Repair and replace eave troughs, drain spouts, expansion joints, and install sheet metal flushings.

  • Repair and replace defective controls, switches, and other electric fixtures.

  • Adjust thermostats.

  • Inspect and make minor repairs to refrigerators, including the replacement of controls, panels, and parts.

  • Request parts and supplies as needed.

  • Assign work to and check work of assigned support employees.


Perform related duties as assigned including, but not necessarily limited to, the following:



  • Weld and lead pipe joints.

  • Maintain and repair electric vacuum sweepers and related floor cleaning and resurfacing equipment.

  • Operate a vehicle for service calls.

  • Repair and alter floors, doors, roofs, decks, stairways, rails, and screening.

  • Repair wood and aluminum window and door frames.

  • Install window glass and plexiglass and repair aluminum storm door closers and chains.

  • Replace and install weather stripping on doors and windows.

  • Clean, repair, and patch carpets.

  • Inspect and make minor repairs to electric ranges, including the replacement of oven controls and coils.

  • Varnish and/or paint doors and other parts of building's exterior and interior.

  • Install plaster board, dry wall, ceramic and plastic tile.

  • Make minor adjustments and repairs to heating equipment.

  • Tighten and replace belts in fans and motors.

  • Replace light bulbs, fuses, and make minor electric switch repairs or replacements.



All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, you will be expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If you have an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of your normally scheduled work hours remotely, you may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.

Minimum Requirements

  • Working knowledge of repair methods, equipment, and tools of the various building trades is necessary.

  • Two years of satisfactory experience as a Maintenance Worker I or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience is necessary.

  • Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license(s) is necessary.

  • Supply own tools.

  • Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds is required.
