Associate Director, BD Excellence (Diagnostic Solutions) / Sparks, MD



I. General Function



This position represents a fantastic opportunity for a talented, highly motivated, and positive individual to become a proactive member of BD's global Operational Excellence (OPEX) community.


Reporting to the Worldwide VP Integrated Supply Chain (DS), the Associate Director, BD Excellence (DS) will be passionate about working with the Plant Leadership Teams to create a culture of operational and customer excellence, implementing change, and driving Continuous Improvement (CI) across the network through BD Excellence.


This strong operational excellence and continuous improvement identity will be created through the systematic application of LEAN production and CI principles, methodologies, and associated tools, to ensure sustainable optimization of performance in the areas of safety, quality, delivery, and cost.



II. Main Responsibilities




1.
Key tasks and strategic accountability:





  • Lead BD Excellence capability development at 4-6 sites, typically focusing on one or more product families. The majority of time to be spent in the factory environment directly developing capability.

  • Cost to Win (CTW) initiative. Focuses primarily on initiatives to improve Plant's operational performance. Ensures all plants in scope have 3-year funnel, delivering required impact annually in CI. Mentors/coaches plant OPEX managers. This position works closely with plant managers, plant OPEX managers, finance, category managers and other CTW leadership to ensure CTW savings are realized.

  • Works closely with the Plant Managers and Site OPEx Manager to support the development and implementation of the improvement strategy for their BD Excellence Maturity.

  • Help shape and deploy BD Excellence roadmap, coordinate and/or lead specific breakthrough Kaizen events and /or initiatives to achieve the Plant's targeted performance improvement through the practical application of Lean Tools and Principles. Leverage Lean Academy as capability building mechanism, to ensure consistent approach and development excellence.

  • Conducts periodic review of KPIs and actions for all plants. Will facilitate and coach plant associates as required to ensure performance goals are achieved. On site coaching and assessments as required. Conducts Zero Loss Workshops as required.

  • Certified or recognized as an experienced Lean Production System practitioner, teach and coach associates to develop and grow BD Excellence capability. Help site leadership teams create strategic vision, ensure alignment through cascading Key Performance Indicators (KPIs') top down and bottom up.

  • Lead focused improvement efforts at key sites / to support critical initiatives (e.g., drive OEE, OLE) or other critical projects. Target multiple breakthrough events each year. Challenge existing paradigms, help accelerate impact of key initiatives.

  • Support global component centers-of-excellence (COEs). Help develop standards and best practices. Optimize methodologies for different manufacturing technologies. Develop and leverage best practices, drive best practice development and adoption. Ensure deploying sites establish and maintain appropriate component KPIs, maintain and promote visibility of global component impact. Support maturity assessment program across multiple business units.

  • Develop and grow BD Excellence impact through deployment of progressively advanced aspects of component methodologies.

  • Owns and drives the process to collaborate with the Business Units (Engineering/Manufacturing) and other functional departments to generate and maintain a multiyear portfolio of plant related operational cost saving projects based on Zero Loss to meet plant objectives. Proactively leads multiple teams to the desired results. Prioritizes cost savings projects. Manages to savings and timeline completion.

  • Responsible for supporting the development and implementation of a strategic plan for continuous improvement of the value streams for each of the plants primary product manufacturing processes and ensuring that they are optimized from a throughput and waste (OEE) perspective.

  • Serves as a champion to overcome barriers by addressing issues promptly. Does not hesitate to challenge the status quo in search of opportunities that help the business provide cost effective solution to the customer.

  • Will often lead project / initiative teams for the achievement of key 0perational goals, including cost-to-win, drive OEE /OLE with purpose.

  • Erroneous decisions or recommendations may cause substantial expenditure of human capital and budgeted resources.



Financial Impact:


  • Has influence on the key drivers for profit, loss, and productivity.

  • Has impact on cost and productivity for represented sites within the business unit. E.g., is responsible for CtW performance on Plant's operational efficiency.

  • Accountable to maintain and optimize loss landscape and multi-year cost-to-win project pipeline.






III. Required skills and knowledge:




Technical Area of Expertise:





  • Demonstrates a specific and advanced set of skills in BD Excellence and has direct experience in leading the application of one or more areas of Operational Excellence / LEAN production.Demonstrates expertise in problem solving, as well as training and coaching others.

  • Often viewed as a thought leader in one or more BD Excellence components.

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant bachelor's degree.

  • Previous experience in implementing, and strong knowledge of, Lean and Six Sigma business systems. Six sigma black belt certification preferred.

  • Demonstrated passion for safety, customer centricity and operational excellence

  • Minimum 10 years manufacturing experience / leadership experience in a plant

  • Excellent understanding of the interaction between operational excellence and customer service

  • Excellent and effective verbal and written communication skills with people at all levels

  • Strong track record in project or program management

  • Experience of working in a multi-site and multi-cultural environment

  • Business acumen and ability to display the linkage between projects and desired business results

  • Minimum 3-years' experience operating a production system. Certified or recognized as a Production System practitioner/specialist in multiple components of the Operating System.






Personal Specification:





  • Flexible and able to travel. Expected travel up to 50% to be present within plants driving Kaizens, improving flow and developing/growing capability within the site.

Associate Director level may be required to directly lead Business OPEX Managers.
