A Day in the Life
As a member of the Medtronic Diabetes - Continuous Glucose Monitoring Sensor R&D team, this Senior Engineer will support the development of next generation sensor technologies. This position will be involved in the early-stage development & optimization of various new materials towards electrochemical sensing platform innovations. You will play a key role in optimizing materials & formulations design and process to enhance sensor performance & stability. This role will be responsible for designing experiments, prototyping, executing bench-top through pre-clinical and clinical studies and cohesively analyzing results. You will be expected to drive a strong understanding of physiochemical properties of formulations/materials as it relates to sensor performance. You will manage deliverables for multiple projects and maintain an effective system for tracking progress. You will be interfacing with Tech leads, Managers, Engineers, Scientists & Technicians as well as Quality and Clinical groups to accomplish day to day activities. The candidate must have strong organizational skills, attention to details, an analytical mindset and ability to communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.


  • Utilize technical & wet lab skills associated with formulations, fabrication & testing of electrochemical sensing platforms

  • Utilize design of experiments (DOEs) and relevant statistical data analysis methodologies in developing and optimizing new materials designs and processes with respect to sensor performance (in vitro & in vivo)

  • Develop appropriate test methods at the materials and in-process levels along with appropriate data analysis methods and metrics

  • Leverage appropriate analytical/material techniques to develop process-structure-property correlations and characterize formulations and product/process; utilize statistical process capability tools to create appropriate specifications for raw materials and formulations.

  • Execute data trending & statistical process analyses and disseminate results to cross-functional teams and leadership

  • Coordinate with material inventory and external or internal vendors in sourcing raw materials and parts for the prototype builds; Develop and support Bill Of Materials (BOM)

  • Develop work instructions and coordinate fabrication for feasibility preclinical & clinical manufacturing; g enerate documentation following good documentation practices in relation to product builds for traceability

  • Act as a key interface with Process Development and Manufacturing teams to support design transfer

  • Ensure processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.

  • Resolve non-compliance issues and inefficiency issues, recommending and implementing process changes.

  • Provides technical support to root-cause analysis on device failures

  • Utilize project management skills to drive schedules and deliver on day-to-day tasks to accomplish goals for a specific project

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering/Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry or related disciplines with 4+ years of relevant industry experience

OR

Masters degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering/Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry or related disciplines with 2+ years relevant industry experience

Nice to Have


  • Experience working with electrochemical biosensors (skillsets could include polymer formulations and/or crosslinking techniques for enzyme and redox mediators, diffusion control membranes etc)

  • Experience with developing formulations for coatings/deposition methodologies including spray, slot, spin, vapor, thick-film fabrication (screen printing), photoresist patterning as relevant to medical device or semiconductor industries (ex: MEMS photolithography processes)

  • Experience with material & analytical characterization techniques such as DSC, TGA, DMA, TMA, Rheology, GPC, FTIR, NMR, Raman, XRD, SIMS, SEM, LC-MS, UV-VIS etc.

  • Familiarity with electrochemical principles and techniques (ex., voltammetry, amperometry, potentiometry etc)

  • Good knowledge of experimental design, DOE techniques, standard statistical tests (T-test, ANOVA and significance testing at a minimum)

  • Experience with statistical data analysis software (ex. Minitab, JMP, etc.) and/or Matlab building scripts for large data analytics, signal processing etc

  • Exposure and/or certifications in process and performance improvement tools such as Lean and/or Six Sigma

  • Familiarity with gauge R&R studies, demonstrating process capability (Ppk & Cpk) and Qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ)

  • Experience with technical documentation (Work Instructions, laboratory notebooks, publications, engineering reports, change requests, IQ/OQ/PQ's, Standard Operating Procedures, test protocols, BOMs, DHFs etc.)

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills

  • Prior experience working in a manufacturing or prototype line in a cleanroom environment in medical device, pharmaceutical or semiconductor industry

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$101,600.00 - $152,400.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
