Pay Grade/Pay Range: Minimum: $56,600 - Midpoint: $73,600 (Salaried E9)



Department/Organization: 840101 - Counseling Center



Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; some evenings & weekends required and on-call crisis intervention services rotation.



Job Summary: The Assistant Director of the Counseling Center assists with the oversight of direct service, training, and administrative functions necessary for the operation and maintenance of the Counseling Center. Provides oversight of staff therapist through matrix reporting structure. Provides leadership of program(s) and/or specialized therapy area(s).



Additional Department Summary: Assists in managing program evaluation functions (accreditation reporting, program evaluation, data management and analysis, peer review functions within the center, etc.). Provides direct counseling services to enrolled University students, outreach services, and consultation services to members of the University community. Works with people in distress and encounters life-threatening emergencies routinely. Serves delegate for the Executive Director in their absence as needed.


Adjusts work schedule during low clinical utilization periods, employing a larger percentage of their time on training activities, and during high clinical utilization periods, employing a larger percentage of their time on clinical duties. Rotates on-call throughout the year for crisis intervention services.


Completes required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. Holds staff accountable for completion of required training.



Required Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree or higher in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work and four (4) years of experience in consultation services, group therapy, teaching, outreach, student work, or case management. Licensure in the state of Alabama at the level of an independent practitioner.



Skills and Knowledge: High degree of sophistication of thought and creativity due to the complex nature of human problems. Excellent human relations, communication, advocacy, and mental health intervention skills. Superior time and task management skills. Ability to use departmental resources to stay up to date on customer needs. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work flexible and evening hours. Ability to use sound judgment and competence in managing critical incidents and communications with others. Basic computer skills (word processing, email, etc.). Ability to effectively interact with University community members for the purpose of program development.

Preferred Qualifications: College or University counseling center experience or two (2) years relevant work experience. Research (data collection and evaluation) experience.
