Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Pharmacy technicians trainees work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed by only a registered pharmacist.Minimum Required: High School Diploma or GED. | Current pharmacy technician registration by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy. Current certified technician certificate (approved by Ohio BOP). Registration and certification throughout their employment with the UC Health Pharmacy Department. | Minimum Required: No experience required. Preferred: 1 Year equivalent experience.PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY):
Engages in population appropriate communication.
Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.
Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
Procures and distributes medication orders per prescriber request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols:
Accepts new written, faxed or electronic prescription orders from a prescriber or a prescriber's agent
Enters information into and retrieves information from a database or patient profile
Prepares and affixes medication labels
Counts and pours dangerous drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist
Prepares non-sterile compounds
Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) safely and accurately using appropriate techniques while under supervision
Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately per established schedule
Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures:
Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing medications and supplies in the pharmacy inventory
Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration
Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications
Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas within the pharmacy accurately within specified time periods
Repackages bulk medications in unit-dose packages safely and accurately per established procedures using appropriate techniques
Contributes to the effective operation of the department:
Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds
Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately
Generates reports, and pick lists as required
Answers the telephone, identifying self and department; directs calls to appropriate personnel
Answers requests at the window/door and makes stat deliveries to patient care and ancillary areas when requested
Organizes and prioritizes work assignments
Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately; files documentation in appropriate locations
Demonstrates good oral and written communication
Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well-organized; keeps pharmacy equipment clean
Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department:
Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly; identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications
Collects data, conducts quality monitors, and completes documentation as assigned
Meets hospital and department standards of performance:
Maintains a neat, professional, and well-groomed appearance; observes pharmacy dress code; wears identification badge at all times
Performs work within specified time frames; adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule
Works cooperatively with all staff members; voices concerns and suggestions to appropriate to appropriate persons in a positive manner
Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members; assists coworkers in tasks, as time permits
Completed required training program to demonstrate competency in the following:
Packaging and labeling of drugs
Pharmacy terminology
Basic calculations
Quality control procedures
State and federal statutes, rules, and regulations regarding pharmacy technician duties, pharmacist duties, pharmacy intern duties, prescription or drug order processing procedures, drug record-keeping requirements, patient confidentiality, security requirements, and storage requirements.
