Department Information



The Associate Research Innovator will join the research department of the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy to manage various national and international research projects. The research department is an invaluable component of the school. The research staff leads the school's signature research projects that have gained national and global recognition. The research staff also organizes international convenings and provides research presentations to various stakeholders around the globe (policymakers, funders, research partners, advisors, and nonprofit organizations). The research staff works across multiple time zones and across countries, cultures, and languages for all projects, which requires exceptional organizational skills and efficiency.



Job Summary



The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy seeks an exceptional colleague to join the research department at the first school of its kind. The Associate Research Innovator will manage various aspects of specific research projects in philanthropy. Projects could be for a variety of different types of clients, including foundations, corporations, nonprofit organizations, higher education institutions, associations, or others interested in the philanthropic sector. The potential research topics vary and could include individual philanthropic behavior, foundation grant making, nonprofit management, public policy, and many other issues related to philanthropy. As a core member of the research staff, the Associate Research Innovator will manage various aspects of specific research projects that are externally funded by the school's partners.


Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Manages all aspects of research projects, including; methodology design, questionnaire development, data analysis, report development, as well as project management and rollout preparation.

  • Conducts research on designated projects at the school.

  • Coordinates, schedules, and manages research activities, including, but not limited to, interviews, focus groups, and survey administration.

  • Prepares written reports appropriate for various audiences and purposes.

  • Presents research findings in public forums for a variety of different audiences.

  • Develops proposals and concept papers to present prospective funders with options for research.

  • Trains and manages students and hourly employees for projects under portfolio.

  • Assists with the dissemination of the school's research projects by working closely with the school's marketing and communications team, designers and PR firms in the development of the final research products in all mediums.

  • Serves as liaison to other collaborative researchers and practitioners inside and outside of Indiana University.

  • Coordinates all administrative aspects of a project, including directing the work of research assistants and outside research associates needed to complete contracted research studies and assure the highest quality and uniformity of their work.

  • Participates in the creation of infographics and other data visualization for public engagement.

  • Interprets data from secondary sources or original research as well as drafts reports, revises written materials including academic papers, and assists in writing press releases and general audience reports; Reviews literature.

  • Writes proposals, reports, academic papers, and press releases, including editing and preparing for publication releases.

  • Manages event organization.

  • Prepares public presentations at national and international conferences.

  • Manages the relationships with various external stakeholders of the school and contribute to the school's core mission.

General Responsibilities

  • Develops or assists in the development of moderately complex project proposals, plans, and protocols.

  • Maintains and oversees research projects

  • Conducts non-routine experiments, investigations and/or studies related to programs and projects in pursuit of new knowledge, techniques and concepts.

  • Coordinates or assists logistics of research to include equipment, materials, and labor needs.

  • Collects data/samples related to others' research sometimes in complex cases.

  • Records, compiles, processes and analyzes data/samples.

  • Documents results and observations in writing as well as presenting results to others.

  • Assists in the preparation of research results for publication or presentation at conferences to include assisting in literature reviews and assisting in the writing of results and discussions.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.


EDUCATION



Required



  • Bachelor's degree in research or a related field


Preferred



  • Master's degree in philanthropy, nonprofit management, social sciences, or a closely related field

WORK EXPERIENCE



Required



  • 4 years of relevant experience


Preferred



  • 1 year of experience in nonprofits, fundraising, education, social science

Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
