Position Overview:



The Process Safety Engineer provides leadership, direction, and structure to help ensure process equipment is properly studied and safeguarded as required by code and company standards. This role is a member of the Process Safety Management Team and is responsible for working successfully across disciplines and work processes to ensure a robust and compliant (code and company standards) safeguarding program. The Process Safety Engineer works with technical disciplines, operations, and maintenance to ensure proper process safety barriers are in place to protect process equipment. Additionally, this role will manage and support execution of process safety projects, complete process safety action items, update documentation, and remain current on external standards and internal requirements.



Responsibilities:



  • Identify applicable overpressure scenarios for process equipment and develop relief requirements for protection.

  • Evaluate pressure relief systems using modeling software to determine proper sizing and selection of relief devices and associated piping.

  • Provide consultancy on installation of pressure relief devices and associated piping to ensure proper relief system performance.

  • Evaluate process systems for temporary alternate pressure relieve strategies to allow Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) inspection and maintenance.

  • Participate in Process Safety Field observations.

  • Maintain an overall site strategy for development and updates to pressure relief and flare studies.

  • Provide consultancy for projects that impact or add process safety barriers.

  • Participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) and risk assessment studies when process safety expertise is required.

  • Review Managements of Change to verify process safety barriers are maintained or improved according to internal and/or external standards.

  • Train operators, craft personnel, and engineers in the principles of pressure relief devices, their responsibilities, and the importance of timely, competent execution of those responsibilities.


Experience and Qualifications:




Required Education and Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering

  • 3+ years of Process Engineering or Process Safety experience in a manufacturing setting




Preferred Education and Experience:



  • Knowledge of safety concepts, relief system design, and industry code/company standards

  • Experience with process and dispersion modeling software

  • Experience with pressure relief valve and flare network modeling software

  • Familiarity with PHA and other risk assessment tools




Physical Requirements:



  • Physical ability to work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders

  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (respirator, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, heeled boots, and hearing protection)
