Summary of Duties:



The Postdoctoral Scholar will:




  • Work with Northwest Climate Hub, Natural Resources Conservation Service staff. and other agencies and stakeholders to identify high-priority research, information, and tool needs related to climate-smart practices in the Northwest.




  • For a set of agricultural practices, conduct syntheses and evaluate effectiveness in storing carbon and increasing climate change resilience in the Northwest.




  • Develop summary reports and communications for NRCS staff and practitioners on mitigation potential, uncertainties, as well as any economic or environmental co-benefits (adaptation or otherwise), for the selected agricultural practices.




  • Conduct independent research to evaluate the sensitivity of existing modeling tools for soil carbon to inputs, parameters, and assumptions.




  • Work with the Northwest Climate Hub to collaborate and coordinate with scientists engaged in parallel efforts in nine other regional Climate Hubs across the country.




  • Publish synthesis and independent research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.




  • Communicate and present results professionally to general and technical audiences at partner meetings and scientific conferences.






Required Qualifications:




  • PhD in soil science, agronomy, crop science, agroecology, biological systems engineering, or closely related field relevant to the project.




  • Experience with one or more carbon measurement and modeling approaches (e.g., DayCent, DNDC, Cycles).




  • Demonstrated experience in relevant field.




  • Ability to complete research independently and to work well as part of a team.




  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills for both scientific and general audiences.




  • Evidence of high-quality scientific publications and presentations in subject areas relevant to this project.




  • Attention to detail and ability to coordinate work on a large complex project.




  • Willingness to learn and implement new approaches and techniques for advancement of the project.






Preferred Qualifications:




  • Familiarity with climate projections and expected climate change impacts on agriculture.




  • Strong analytical skills.




  • Background and interest in extension, outreach, and/or the application of scientific information in practice.

Annual Salary:


$70,000.00 - $84,000.00



In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

This is a temporary position expected to end on October 31, 2025. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.
