Job Description:

We are seeking to fill the position of Senior Systems Administrator in the Research Services department within the Information Technology Services (ITS) organization (the central IT provider across the University of Iowa campus). This is an opportunity to work in a supportive, exciting, and mission-focused group dedicated to supporting research computing at the University of Iowa, a comprehensive Research 1 institution.

The successful candidate for this position will provide systems administration support for research data storage services offered by ITS Research Services. This position will include working in collaboration with others across campus in support of research computing initiatives. Examples of these initiatives are supporting high performance file systems for HPC applications, providing new ways for researchers to share data and collaborate across institutions, and working with OneIT stakeholders to deploy low-cost desktop-accessible storage.

The Senior Systems Administrator will provide service leadership across campus by working with research and IT stakeholders to identify, implement, and communicate the best shared or centrally hosted solutions while supporting and implementing services which enable and accelerate the research mission of the University of Iowa. A strong customer focus is required to be successful in the role and an ability to communicate to technical and non-technical audiences is a required skill.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Actively working to promote a welcoming and respectful work environment within Research Services, ITS, OneIT, and the University.
  • Develop recommendations for enhancing storage offerings.
  • Maintaining and supporting the Linux/Unix systems that make up the Research storage services
  • Work with automation and configuration management tools to provision systems and software.
  • Development of software and hardware requirements. Develop recommendations on organizational support procedures, guidelines, and policies
  • Participate in creating awareness within the organization of specific changes in hardware and software
  • Represent and provide feedback on the technology needs of campus researchers to Research Services and the wider IT community
  • Write documentation for internal and external audiences.
  • Collect and analyze service data/metrics.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
  • Typically 5-7 years of experience in enterprise-level configuration, including supporting and managing related technologies
  • Extensive experience with current Linux/Unix operating systems
  • Extensive experience designing complex systems, along with the ability to explain processes, deliverables, and best practices for performance
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff
  • Extensive experience in IT security hardening techniques
  • Extensive experience with scripting languages (such as Bash, Python, Ruby, Perl)
  • Extensive experience with troubleshooting complex environments using advanced diagnostic techniques and tools for unusual or performance-related problems
  • US Citizenship or permanent resident status is required for ITAR systems.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working with regulatory regimes such as FISMA, HIPAA, and ITAR
  • Experience implementing and managing high-complexity enterprise level projects and services
  • Familiarity with virtualization (such as VMware and Hyper-V)
  • Experience evaluating new and emerging technologies and their potential applications at an enterprise level
  • Working experience with configuration management (Puppet, Chef, etc.)
  • Working experience with log aggregation/audit software (auditd, BSM; ELK/Splunk)
  • Working experience with CEPH
  • Extensive experience with ZFS
  • Extensive experience with parallel filesystems (such as BeeGFS, Lustre, GPFS)
  • Experience supporting technology in a research setting
  • Experience with high performance computing
  • Working experience with version control tools (such as Git)
  • Working experience troubleshooting server hardware
