The Role




This position will be in the Aircraft Carrier Engineering Propulsion Machinery Department (E64), which leads the US Navy in the design, repair, and modernization of propulsion machinery and piping systems on aircraft carriers. This position will provide technical leadership for the overhaul, repair, and design of complex propulsion machinery, specifically main engines, on CVN 68 (Nimitz) Class and CVN 78 (Ford) Class carriers. An initial focus area will be coordinating a design improvement effort across these two programs.


Researches, develops, designs, and/or tests components, equipment, systems, and networks in one or more engineering disciplines. May design equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. Applies engineering principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.




Must Have




Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.




Nice to Have




The ideal candidate should have extensive knowledge of the design, operation, overhaul, and repair of steam-driven propulsion turbines and reduction gears on CVN 68 (Nimitz) Class and/or CVN 78 (Ford) Class aircraft carriers. The candidate should have expertise with the design concepts associated with large-scale gears, turbines, bearings, fasteners, and bolted joints. This position will require working with other manufacturers in design development or modification and be responsible for reviewing and obtaining customer approval of design, drawings, and manuals. Other knowledge areas that will be beneficial in this position are designing for manufacturing/producibility, critical alignment, non-destructive test techniques, welding to TechPub 278, various precise measurement methodologies, failure analysis, finite element analysis, strength of materials, and designing for severe shock, stress, and vibration environments. Strong skills are desired in project management, clear and concise communication, supply chain management, risk management, quality management, and technical presentations.
