Reporting to the Director of Compliance Assurance, the Safety & Ergonomics Specialist , is responsible for reviewing and providing instruction and leadership related to facility improvement plans for business units, in conjunction with business unit and plant safety personnel and the plant operations teams. This individual will have a strong passion for safety, balanced with a bias to implement safety improvements by closely collaborating with operating units and professionals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Maintain close ties with Safety and Operational leaders within the 7 Business Units with the focus on driving reductions in IRR and Workman's Compensation costs.
  • Define and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations .
  • Uphold an environment and culture focused on sustaining safe operations, proactively working to improve the physical conditions, and engage team member behavior in recognizing a companywide culture of health, safety, and environmental in all aspects of their lives.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with all OSHA, MSHA, DOT, FMCSA, and HazMat regulations pertaining to operations while maintaining awareness of any amendments to those regulations and its impact on operations.
  • Lead and Develop the Ergonomics program.
  • Assist with analyzing and summarizing key metrics to support reporting about EHS performance.
  • Collaborate with employees to understand problems, issues, and obtain suggested alternatives.
  • Develop and lead JBPCO safety and health training programs related to Ergonomics.
  • Plan and implement programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials .
  • Administer all aspects of company safety policies and procedures including incident response and reporting.
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses of areas around knowledge, create site-specific programs when necessary, and train accordingly .
  • Work closely with the 5 work sites that are identified as JBPCO "red sites" to support plant personnel with improvement of safety.
  • Ensure safety technology tools are used and those results are examined, trend data is analyzed, and plans are developed to reduce and prevent future safety incidents.
  • New Employee Orientation: training, testing, and on-boarding.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Compliance Assurance.

Qualifications and Skills


  • Bachelor's degree in safety, engineering or similar discipline. A graduate degree and certification (CIH or CSP) would be a plus.
  • Advanced training in Ergonomics.
  • 8+ years of safety and health experience including OSHA, ANSI, NFPA and DOT regulations; multi-site experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Good communications skills, great attitude, ability to be a team leader under challenging conditions, proven problem solving ability and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to persuade and convince organizations to make positive change for employee safety improvements without direct reporting responsibility.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Track record of implementing programs and projects in multiple areas of safety management and execution.
  • Being a positive self-motivator with a passion for the safety profession.
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to diagnose and identify safety priorities.

***The Safety & Ergonomics Specialist is expected to travel up to 50%.
