Job Description:

The Department of Labor has a great opportunity to join the Labor Standards Division as a Labor Law Specialist and conduct inspections and investigations to enforce compliance of labor laws enforced by the Department of Labor. We are looking for a candidate who can work independently, interpret state laws and regulations, and communicate effectively with individuals of all levels.

Examples of Work


• Conduct Labor Law investigations, inspections, payroll audits; prepare and close case files.
• Conduct on-site inspections and interviews at construction sites to ensure compliance with Contractor Registration (CRA) and Employee Classification (ECA).
• Enter completed inspections and interview contact notes into database.
• Meet with CRA support staff, ECA Staff and manager on a regular basis to discuss complaints, travel agenda and daily workload.
• Assist walk-in customers with questions, complaints, and applications for all Labor Laws enforced by the Labor Standards division.
• Assist staff with updates to Contractor Registration information in the database daily and as necessary to keep database current.
• Answer telephone and email requests for information regarding Labor Standards laws.
• Maintain spreadsheets and statistics regarding case files and investigations.
• Disseminate timely and accurate oral and written information regarding Labor Laws to employers, employees and general public.
• Prepare case narrative for Office of General Counsel when punitive action citations are issued.
• Trouble shoot problems that arise from incomplete or inaccurate CRA applications or renewals.
• Conduct presentations to groups regarding CRA, ECA and all other labor laws enforced by Labor Standards.


Location: NDOL Administration Building, 550 South 16th St, Lincoln, NE
Work Schedule: 8am - 5pm; Monday - Friday



Requirements / Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications: Post high school coursework/training in: public administration, business administration, personnel administration, labor law, bookkeeping, accounting, or social/behavioral sciences; OR experience in: business, labor relations, social services, and/or labor law with responsibility for interpretation and enforcement of laws, rules, and regulations including investigations of alleged violations.



Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in public administration, business administration, personnel administration, social/behavioral sciences human services, or closely related field. Experience with technical writing. Must have good working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint. Spanish/English bilingual language skills are preferred.



Other: Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation. Must be able to work outdoors and physically maneuver safely around active contruction sites and potentially hazardous environments.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


Knowledge of: Nebraska and Federal labor laws; the practices and procedures of employment/labor investigation.



Skilled in: Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint; management information systems; presenting information both virtually and inperson; attention to detail; reporting and analysis; case management; record management.



Ability to: interact and communicate directly and effectively (both verbally and in writing) with employers and the public; organize workload; multitask; research applicable State and Federal program laws and policies; adhere to agency policies; maintain regular and reliable attendance.
