Job Description:

Under general supervision, serves as a lead worker on a continuous basis and assigns and monitors the work activities of a crew engaged in various semi-skilled to skilled tasks to maintain and preserve bridges, highways, shoulders, roadside areas, structures, and other broad pavement surfaces and related markings/signs in a safe condition. Work is conducted in a safe manner. Performs independent skilled maintenance duties; work is performed outdoors in all types of weather with assignment to a geographic area or a specialized statewide unit; performs related work as assigned. The successful applicant will train and guide the work assignments of Highway Maintenance Workers bridge crew, perform maintenance operations, assist the Supervisor in the management of personnel, and report the work performance of crew members.


Pay rate range of $24.228 per hour to $35.716 per hour. Pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints, if approved.

Job Duties


- Operate trucks and other bridge repair equipment to complete highway maintenance bridge work.
- Under general supervision, serves as a lead worker on a continuing basis and assigns, explains, and monitors the work of a crew performing a variety of semi-skilled to skilled highway maintenance duties, while performing these same activities; performs independent skilled highway maintenance duties and performs related work as required.
- Operates, services, and maintains trucks, rollers, front-end loaders, tractors, motor graders asphalt distributors, chip spreaders, asphalt laydown machines, bridge repair equipment, etc.
- Guides the work assignments of Highway Maintenance Workers and assists the supervisory staff in the timely accomplishments of highway maintenance operations.
- Assists the Supervisor in the management of personnel and reports to supervisory staff on the work performance of crew members.
- Trains and leads Highway Maintenance Workers in all maintenance work activities following department specifications, standards, and regulations such as operation of all equipment, sign and guardrail repair, shoulder work, bridge work, landscaping, snow removal, storm damage, traffic control, emergency response, use of materials, preventative maintenance, servicing assigned equipment, personal safety and safe operation of equipment.
- Safely moves, drags, lifts, loads, and unloads various equipment, materials, supplies, and hazardous materials or objects from the roadway; spreads and tamps surfacing materials.
- Performs snow and ice removal.
- Fills in for Maintenance Supervisor in their absence.
- Maintains records and reports of daily operations, materials, and resources.
- Uses personal computer for time reporting, record keeping, documentation, reports, etc.
- Attends training to keep current on procedures, equipment, and materials.
- Performs other duties as assigned.



Requirements/ Qualifications




Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age, and possess a valid driver's license. Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Drivers License with air brakes and tanker endorsements is required to be appointed to the Highway Maintenance Crew Chief class or ability to obtain the CDL within 60 days of employment. Loss of licenses/endorsements may result in termination of the employee. Experience in the maintenance of highways, roadsides, and other pavement surfaces and the operation of general and specialized equipment used to maintain and preserve these surfaces or to support these functions.



Preferred Qualification: Five years experience and proficiency in maintenance activities and operating the equipment and tools used in maintenance activities listed above and safe work procedures. Experience with paperwork associated with maintenance activities. Experience resolving minor crisis situations without supervisory input. Experience training and leading a crew.



Other: A Valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with O Restriction and tanker endorsement is required within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Must be a safe worker that is team-oriented. Occasional overnight travel may be required. Regular and reliable attendance.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



Must have effective communication skills and have the ability to interpret and follow instructions; make routine decisions required to keep the work group processing; explain work assignments to other employees; resolve interpersonal problems on the crew; recognize safety hazards and take steps to correct the situation. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours, including holidays and weekends, for snow and other highway emergencies, within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions and be placed in an "on-call" status. Must be able to safely move, drag, and lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance) and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance); climb, bend, or stoop; work in outdoor temperature extremes and work around high-speed traffic.
