Job Description:

Heluna Health invites applicants for a full-time Public Health Investigator (PHI) position for the San Francisco Department of Public Health Communicable Disease (CD) Section. PHIs support initiatives within the Immunization Program, Communicable Disease Program, and/or the Adult Immunization and Travel Clinic (AITC). PHIs perform a range of administrative duties, client-facing, and community-level health work aimed at increasing health equity and reducing disparities in vaccination and disease rates for COVID-19 and other communicable diseases across San Francisco populations. This position may include support to the Community Service and Response (CSR) Team, SFDPH’s mobile vaccine and disease investigation service, to offer vaccines, investigate and contain outbreaks in neighborhood, home and/or non-traditional settings. PHIs will gain exposure to a wide variety of Communicable Disease Control and Prevention activities and may support other projects as needed within the CD Section.

This is a temporary, grant-funded, full-time, benefitted position. Employment is provided by Heluna Health.

This position may include weekend/holiday hours or shifts to provide for coverage of essential duties. This time would be included as part of the regular work schedule and would be planned in coordination with the Program Manager. Work will be performed primarily in office, clinical, and community settings.

Pay range: $30.29-33.38 per hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Under the direction of the Community Service and Response Coordinator and Nurses, work closely with community partners, and other key stakeholders to plan and implement community immunization events

• Follow established protocols to facilitate patient visits in a clinic or event setting, including registration and scheduling appointments in person or over the phone, assisting in appointment check in, check out, collecting payment, screening for eligibility and responding to patient questions, setting up and breaking down community immunization events.

• Collaborate with a wide range of colleagues (epidemiologists, programs coordinators, health workers, community leaders, school health authorities, state and local public health leadership) to provide vaccine and disease prevention and control services; participate in efforts to reduce disparities and promote equity in vaccination rates among at-risk populations.

• Follow best practices to receive and process vaccine shipments

• Attend trainings to understand local health equity issues and key strategies to communicate about immunizations and communicable diseases to a wide variety of audiences.

• Work with other team members to further develop and enhance protocols, and assist with training new staff

• Attend all required staff meetings

• Perform other duties as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications

• Knowledge of principles of community engagement and outreach

• Experience working in clinical settings performing patient registration and/or education

• Experience working with a culturally and economically diverse population, including people of color and gay/bisexual/transgender populations

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written)

• Ability to function independently

• Willingness to respond to changing needs within the section

• Ability to work effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals, community groups, medical staff, and public health professionals.

• Knowledge of and familiarity with PC based computer systems and software programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, EXCEL, Teams, and PowerPoint.

• Experience with answering and directing phone calls in a clinical or customer service setting

• Organizational skills and analytical abilities.

• Familiarity with HIPAA requirements

Desired Qualifications

• Bi-lingual English/Spanish, English/Cantonese speaker

• Familiarity with community organizations in San Francisco

• Experience with public health program implementation including but not limited to delivery of immunization services

• Familiarity with EHR systems (such as EPIC) or ability to quickly learn and utilize EHR and other systems to facilitate patient care

Education/Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of two (2) years of relevant work experience with clients in public health, community services or medical settings
