Job Description:

Volunteers of America National Services is seeking a Staff Development Director to join our Minnesota team. This person will be based out of Anoka, MN and support all Minnesota facilities.



About the Job: The Director of Staff Development is a facilitator, teacher and resource person. This person is responsible for the education program of the facility. This includes assessing needs, planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the staff development program(s). The Director of Staff Development develops and conducts an education program, the focus of which is on assisting individuals to perform competently in fulfillment of the role expectations within the facility. This person is responsible for providing in-service training for all staff in accordance with Federal and State Rules and Regulations.

M-F 9:00 AM-5:30 PM (Must be able to travel to MN facilities)

Essentials:




Administrative Functions
• Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate and direct staff development, training and orientation of the facility.
• Assist department supervisors in developing monthly in-service programming and related documentation to support attendance.
• Manages employee job coach program in conjunction with Human Resources.





Committee Functions:
• Serve as directed on various QAA/QAPI, utilizing the QAPI process committees and PIP's of the facility and provide written and/or verbal reports of the activities as required by the committee guidelines or directions.
• Attend departmental and facility staff meetings.
• Develop Customer Service training with Facility Management



Personnel Functions:
• Determine departmental needs and recommend changes/additions/deletions to your supervisor.
• Participates in activities that further the professional growth and development of the staff development position.
• Develops, maintains and utilizes records pertinent to the staff development program and a required per regulation.
• Participates in counseling and guidance of personnel in relation to their educational needs.
• Exhibits and practices customer service of staff, residents and outside agencies and reflects the attitude and philosophy of the organization.
• Provide monthly calendar of scheduled training and in-service opportunities.
• Provide support to the facility by working on-call and/or performing the building duties in the absence of the DON as directed.





Staff Development Functions:





General Orientation



General Orientation is the means by which new staff members are familiarized with the facility's philosophy, goals, policies and procedures, key personnel, physical plant, special services, and core systems



Job Orientation
Information/education necessary for a new employee to initially perform the job for which he/she was hired as well as facilitates a plan for utilization of the employee job coach program. Occurs at the time of hire. The purpose is to ensure the employee is a capable and competent in their role. There is an assessment made at this time of future learning needs.






In-Service Class/Continuing Education
Class time spent teaching a skill (use of equipment or a procedure), sharing of information and knowledge, or teaching an update of any health/safety related areas. Provides and facilitates one-on-one training and "Just in Time" training as needed.



Continuing Education
Planning organized learning experiences designed to develop/increase knowledge base, which relates to chosen position or profession. There must be behavioral objectives, content, teaching strategies which relate to objectives. The faculty must be qualified and the learning facilities appropriate based on state requirements. The education activities may include workshops, conferences, seminars, courses and self-directed learning.




Safety and Sanitation
• Monitor and ensure that assigned personnel follow established safety regulations in the use of equipment and supplies.
• Ensure that the work areas are maintained in a clean, sanitary manner.
• Ensure that all department personnel participate in fire and safety disaster preparedness drills in a safe and professional manner. Report any exposure to blood/body fluids per facility policy.




Required Qualifications:



  • Current licensure in the state of employment as a Registered Nurse.

  • Registered Nurse with minimum of two (2) years experience in nursing in a long-term care setting or related experiences and/or adult education.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of gerontology, rehabilitative, and medical-surgical nursing care.

  • Knowledgeable and experienced in concepts and techniques of adult education.

  • Knowledge of State and Federal regulatory requirements for long-term care.

  • Overall understanding of RAI process, Case Mix, and Medicare.

  • Knowledge of current Antibiotic Stewardship, Infection Prevention and Infection Control and OSHA guidelines

  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.

  • Professional attitude, high degree of self-motivation and leadership qualities.

  • Customer service oriented with knowledge of successful customer service techniques.

  • Demonstrates coaching, and mentoring abilities to facilitate learning of others.

  • Understanding of Corporate Compliance, and Abuse/Neglect guidelines.
