Job Description:

Nature of Work
Perform a variety of administrative tasks to facilitate the efficient operation of the Detention Center; assist the Warden, Command Staff and civilian members as needed; manage and maintain the Warden and Assistant Warden's correspondence, task, and event tracking database to ensure successful completion; represent Commanders at public functions and meetings; and perform all other duties as assigned.


The Command Support Specialist (Corrections) position has opportunities for overtime and compensatory time.
Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:


  • Perform administrative tasks to facilitate the efficient operation of the Detention Center.
  • Answer incoming phone calls, determine purpose of call and forward to appropriate personnel and/or take accurate messages.
  • Prepare various correspondence, reports, letters, memorandums, etc. for the Warden's signature, as well as Command Staff members.
  • Maintain Warden's Office task, event, and correspondence database; follow-up with appropriate Commanders and/or supervisors to ensure satisfactory conclusion.
  • Review and respond to requests for the Command Staff to appear at or participate in local events.
  • Identify, direct, prepare, and maintain all nominations of HCDC personnel for local, state, and national awards and service recognition and/or retirement.
  • Create and maintain confidential files, records, file systems and databases.
  • Schedule Warden's appointments, establish priorities of appointments and ensure meeting spaces are properly reserved. Facilitate virtual meetings when necessary.
  • Represent Warden and Sheriff's Office via telephone calls, meetings, and public functions.
  • Troubleshoot high-profile issues for the Detention Center.
  • Collect, track and route incoming correspondence.
  • Manage the inventory of office supplies and equipment; order when needed.
  • Assist in the dissemination of information through the Office of Media and Public Relations.
  • Assist in preparation and attend Agency ceremonies and functions.
  • Perform minor accounting duties, such as reconciling Commanders' P-Card transactions with statements.
  • Provide administrative support to civilian Directors.
  • Keep Command Staff and relevant others informed of any issues in a timely fashion.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with Agency staff.
  • Keep informed on current administrative practices by attending workshops and educational programs or reading specialized literature.
  • Attend meetings, take notes and disseminate as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of administrative/executive secretary work at a responsible level.
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of law enforcement and correctional operations, preferred.

  • Ability to compose and type accurately and with reasonable speed, a variety of correspondence, reports, and other materials from rough draft or handwritten copy; ability to accurately proofread.
  • Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff's Office to the public.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English in a clear, effective manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and coherently with other Agency personnel and the public, either in person or by telephone.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently organize, track, and maintain relevant documentation.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy in assigned tasks.
  • Ability to establish priorities and organize workload effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to utilize a high level of discretion, good judgment, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and members of the public, and work as a team.
  • Ability to maintain a pleasant and productive working atmosphere.
  • Ability to operate office equipment, including printers, phones, fax machines, computers and computer software (MS office and relevant Agency databases).
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation and random drug screening



  • Selected Candidate:


  • Must be 18 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen with 10 years of verifiable U.S. residency.
  • Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with no more than three (3) points.
  • Must provide handwriting sample for review.
  • Must appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from an Oral Interview Board.
  • Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity and good interpersonal skills. Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.

    PERSONAL LEAVE - For new employees, personal leave is prorated according to schedule below, for the first year only. Any employee on board as of December 31st of each year automatically receives 8 days as of January 1st the following year. (NOTE: Personal Leave may not be taken until successful completion of probationary period; personal leave will be lost if not taken before December 31st of each year.)

    RETIREE HEALTH CARE INSURANCE BENEFITS-


    Employees hired on or after 7/1/2010 will have an automatic Retirement Health Savings account made available as the primary retiree healthcare benefit. This 105(h) Universal Reimbursement Account will only be able to be accessed upon separation of service and/or retirement whichever applicable.
