We are seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer 2 at our site in Portland, OR. This site focuses on designing consumer optics products employing optical systems (such as handheld laser rangefinders). In this role, you will develop moderately complex mechanical solutions, test and validate, complete technology explorations and/or deliver to mass production.
Essential Functions
Complete moderately complex mechanical designs for Garmin or OEM products
Model complex parts as an expert CAD user
Collaborate and add value through participation in design reviews, providing comments and suggestions on mechanical engineering designs
Mockup and test basic mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements
Interface with Optical, Electrical, and Process Engineers, and Industrial Designers to negotiate basic tradeoffs between manufacturing, appearance, and performance
Make estimates on tooling, part cost and design time for basic mechanical designs
Communicate effectively with vendors that produce custom mechanical parts as required
Specify test plans to validate moderately complex systems
Possess knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining processes, etc.
Demonstrate proficient knowledge of preferred part materials for basic part production and performance
Provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems using creativity and sound problem solving techniques
Serve as a mentor to Mechanical Engineer 1 level associates
Apply a sense of urgency, ownership and focu on the right priorities to develop solutions in a timely fashion
Overseas travel as required
Communicate regularly with Taiwan manufacturing teammates
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering AND 1 year relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Demonstrates knowledge of CAD software and the ability to model moderately complex parts (SolidWorks/OnShape)
Demonstrates proficient knowledge and utilization of relevant engineering tools
Desired Qualifications
Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
Mechanical systems repair or troubleshooting experience
Experience with optics and optical sysems OR design of fine tolerance components
