Position Overview


As a Student Success Advisor, this position provides direct service and support to students through comprehensive academic and career planning from the point of admission to graduation. Provides learning strategy support, graduation planning, and monitoring student progress toward degree. Specific responsibilities include the provision of guidance and mentoring to optimize the student experience and, in turn, improve student retention and success. Provides services related to some or all of the following: recruitment, advisement, orientation, registration, assessment of learning, engagement, and career planning. May provide services related to a specific area or industry requiring specialized knowledge, skills, or experience within the field.


This position provides direct service and support to Nutrition and Food Science graduate students. Advises students and evaluates their abilities, interests, talents, and personality characteristics in order to develop appropriate academic and career goals. Provides individual and group guidance services relative to problems of scholastic, educational, and personal-social nature to students. Plans and directs program to orient students and assists in their integration into scholastic life. Investigates reports of misconduct and attempts to resolve or eliminate causes of conflict.



Department Specific Essential Job Functions




  • Work closely with the graduate faculty in HES and other CEPS programs.




  • Review applications for admission and make recommendations on admission based on the standard criteria.




  • Create, update, and coordinate plans of study.




  • Provide standard advisement to new and current graduate students to fulfill program requirements.




  • Conduct information and advisement sessions via Zoom, phone, and face-to-face appointments.




  • Apply student permissions and overrides as needed for regular enrollment.




  • Maintain email communications with prospective and existing graduate students.




  • Be the point of contact for students and direct questions to appropriate faculty or university resources.




  • Collect and organize admission data for enrollment and retention analysis.




  • Manage new program orientation, and new student informational sessions and assist as needed with other HES or CEPS events related to graduate students.




  • Create and disseminate information on logistics, and program for new graduate students.




  • Be the point of contact to the Graduate College for the students and respond to requests from the Graduate College.




  • Work with Career Services to connect with local employers and work with College of Education and Professional studies to organize career fairs for nutrition and food science students.




  • Work with student club officers to help organize club activities.




  • Be the point of contact for the department and students to the UCO office of Global Affairs. Assist with recruitment efforts and outreach for international applicants.




  • Assist with grant writing to seek funds for scholarship opportunities for students in the program and recruitment/retention.




  • Work flexible hours as needed for student advisement and events.




  • Other duties as assigned.





Qualifications Required


Bachelor's degree in job related field or 4+ years of work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.



Qualifications Preferred


3+ years of prior experience in academic advising/counseling. Familiarity with admission and enrollment process in an institution of higher education setting and its graduate degree programs. Knowledge of Ellucian Banner and Microsoft Office products. Experience in working with graduate students. Familiarity with the unique needs of international students. A background in nutrition and food science or related.





Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


Knowledgeable in the higher education attainment process, particularly the requirements and general value of education. Demonstration of a warm and caring professional attitude and creative counseling techniques. Ability to communicate effectively with program coordinators, department chairpersons and/or deans regarding degree program requirements. Ability to work well under pressure. Understanding of the University policies and procedures as they relate to academic advising. Ability to maintain databases.
