The Director of Ventures and Product Development will be a driven, entrepreneurial, passionate, and rigorous professional who will help run an established proof-of-concept bio-accelerator program within CU Innovations and support venture creation and product development across the campus.  They will drive innovative problem solving for early-stage academic discoveries, manage complex client and stakeholder interactions, produce industry-enhancing thought leadership, and ensure the excellence of client deliverables. The Director of Ventures and Product Development will also pursue business development opportunities that drive the Venture program’s continued growth. They will design and implement internal initiatives that support spinout ventures, grant program cohorts and the CU Innovations’ mission.


The Director of Ventures and Product Development will take the Ventures program to the next level by utilizing existing resources effectively and efficiently and working to develop new resources to complement existing infrastructure, including working with faculty to evaluate early-stage discoveries, recruiting subject matter experts as mentors and building long-term relationships with industry partners to develop early-stage scientific discoveries as products.



Key Responsibilities:



  • Cultivate an environment that promotes the creation of high-value venture companies

  • Expand upon the organizational infrastructure for CU Innovations Ventures programming

  • Supervise the day-to-day functioning of grant programs such as the SPARK program

  • Help build project plans and milestones for selected teams in collaboration with program mentors and outside experts

  • Plan and execute activities for the ventures programming, including extensive coordination, planning, and communication.

  • Help faculty to identify CROs to work with and assist with the preparation of relevant documents ahead of interactions with regulatory agencies or investors.

  • Connect selected teams to product development experts and as these teams form startups, help identify business partners and investors for them.



Work Location:



Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3-4 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

    Qualifications:



    Minimum Qualifications:



    • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry, biology, genetics, biomedical engineering or related field.

    • 8+ years or professional experience working in similar roles, including experience in product development in biotechnology, venture development, working with academic investigators, and developing and implementing project plans.



    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.



    Preferred Qualifications:



    • Advanced degree in chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry, biology, genetics, biomedical engineering or related field.

    • 10+ years or professional experience working in similar roles, including experience in product development in biotechnology, venture development, working with academic investigators, and developing and implementing project plans.

    • MBA.

    • Post-doctoral fellowship or instructor experience.

    • Product development experience in large biotechnology corporations.

    • Previous experience running an academic incubator program advancing faculty ventures.

    Anticipated Pay Range:


    The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $155,035 - $170,000


    The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
