Lonza Pharma & Biotech has an opening for an experienced Automation Engineer at their Bend, Oregon location. As an Automation Engineer you will be responsible for supporting the troubleshooting, repair, modification, and installation of pharmaceutical process equipment and building automation systems as part of a team. Group responsibilities include supporting site operations from GMP manufacturing to product development. A successful candidate will demonstrate familiarity with automated industrial control systems and instrumentation, and possess a collaborative mindset; working with other colleagues on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Open communication, a team-oriented mindset, and a desire to learn are key attributes.
Key responsibilities:
5 plus years’ experience in biotech/pharmaceutical engineering preferred
Assist in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of automated process and facility equipment and control systems
Support equipment startup, commissioning, and qualification activities
Troubleshoot and repair automated industrial control systems to support manufacturing and development operations
Perform hands-on, detailed work, in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
Collaborate with internal multi-disciplinary team members to design/modify equipment to support GMP operation, product development, and R&D activities
Work collaboratively with automation team colleagues, support electrical and automation designs of senior colleagues, communicate openly, and learn from each other
Support field installation of instrumentation and controls devices to system control panels
Support updates to data historian systems (OSIsoft PI System)
Demonstrated ability to perform hands-on, detailed work, in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
Experience working on the floor in a manufacturing process environment required
Proficient in the design, installation and implementation electro-mechanical control systems
Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems and automated equipment in a GMP environment
Knowledge of practices applied to the preparation of hardware/software specifications and related contract documents
Knowledge of industry-standard software engineering principles such as IEEE, GAMP and 21CFR Part 11 is required
Knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD and Building Automation Systems preferred

Key requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree (preferred), Associates Degree (minimum) in Industrial Controls / Automation / Electrical Engineering or similar field
Experience working with industrial automation, instrumentation and controls, preferably in a manufacturing environment
Experience in biotech/pharmaceutical or similar regulated industries preferred
After hours support of manufacturing operations on an on-call rotation basis
Electrical troubleshooting experience and familiarity with safety practices a plus
Familiarity with Allen Bradley PLC and HMI development environment, Studio 5000 and supporting FactoryTalk systems (FT Directory, AssetCentre, Alarm & Events, etc.)
Knowledge of 2D CAD systems to support electrical and system documentation preferred
Familiarity with P&IDs
Familiarity with SCADA and Building Automation Systems
Familiarity with IT/OT, network systems, and security a plus
