Position Summary:



  • Serve as a first line contact person for the MSU Extension Master Gardener® Program. Communicate with MSU Extension Master Gardener® volunteers, MSU Extension staff, and the public, to address questions, share program-related resources, and facilitate administrative procedures related to being an MSU Extension Master Gardener®.
    * Oversee/manage an extensive electronic database with records for approximately 250 volunteers, under the supervision of the Consumer Horticulture Educator to keep the records current and compliant, monitoring projects and deadlines for hours entered and recognition awards.
    * Utilize Dell, Microsoft, and Zoom products, on a daily basis to communicate with volunteers, supervisor, and teammates.
    * Follow up with volunteers to ensure they received materials that pertain to requirements needed to become and remain certified as an MSU Extension Master Gardener, including annual recertification, volunteer/education hours entries, and volunteer screening.
    * Assist volunteers with the MSU Extension Volunteer Screening Process (VSP). Assist with screening prospective volunteers, enter data into software, and advise volunteers in program policies.
    * Attend meetings and trainings pertinent to the work described above (trainings may require in-state travel).
    * Assist Consumer Horticulture Educator with marketing and promotions related to the Extension Master Gardener Program®




Position Term:

Up to 10 hours per week are expected for this role, and some of the duties may be performed remotely. Occasional evening or weekend hours could be required to facilitate programming in Wayne County.


Up to 19 hours allowed per week without the ability to exceed 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.



Desired Qualifications

  • Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities, and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.

  • Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.

  • Combination of education and specific, relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

  • Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.

  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and use of appropriate approaches, skills and techniques, which reflect an understanding and awareness of social, cultural and economic diversity of the target population served.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, Zoom, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.).

  • Knowledge of and experience with computer-based databases and recordkeeping.

  • Attention to detail and ability to learn online volunteer management software database.

  • Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, Zoom, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.).

  • Previous experience working with volunteers and/or for an organization that services communities

  • Comfortable communicating with volunteers over the phone, in person, and in front of groups.

  • Experience interacting with a variety of clients in a service-oriented manner

  • Knowledge of, experience in, or desire to learn about, vegetable and flower gardening.

  • Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
